Am unable to install updates on an SBS 2011 (Server 2008 R2) system. Seems a few updates work here and there, but the majority do not. For example, KB2861698 immediately fails when I try to run it. Same for most updates.

I have the latest version of the system readiness tool on the machine and have run it.

Checksur comes back clean with the exception of (What appears to be a known bug) two files that are IE11 related.

Below are URLs of our components hive as well as the checksur and windowsupdate log files. Any help is appreciated!

This one will need the CBS.log uploaded immediately after a failed installation attempt. Components hive looks to be a normal size, but it was uploaded as a .REG file, which won't give any true indication if it can be properly mounted as a hive.

Components hive is still a .REG file, but we'll ignore that for now, as we have an error in CBS. The error in question is this:

Code:
2015-12-28 10:00:55, Error CSI 0000002a@2015/12/28:15:00:55.464 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(11690): Store corruption detected in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::CheckFamilyIndexForDeadWinnerComponent expression: (null)
  MissingWinningComponentKey on resource [93]"amd64_netfx35linq-system.web.extensions_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18138_none_2c8df1e901d6b014"[gle=0x80004005]

The section of the registry we need to modify is not permissions-restricted for normal admin users, so do me a favor and run Regedit, then navigate to this key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\SideBySide\Winners\amd64_netfx35linq-system.web.extensions_31bf3856ad364e35_none_4c9fef0b98a3e750\6.1

On the right, you will see a value called (Default), with a numeric version number as the data. You will also see several Binary values below that, one of which will be "6.1.7601.18138". This is likely going to also be the value for the (Default) entry. Right-click on the Binary value called 6.1.7601.18138, and select Delete. Now, if the value for (Default) was also 6.1.7601.18138, you will need to double-click to edit that value, and you will change the data value to match the highest remaining binary value below it (an example may be 6.1.7601.17750, but verify this number on that system, and put the appropriate one in for Default). Now retry that update.

Odd re: the components. That second copy was using the backup utility recommended in the how to post.

Anyway, went through the steps you mentioned on the registry and that seemed to help (Didn't fail IMMEDIATELY), but still failed.

Here's the latest CBS log after the failure. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17520956/Sysnative/CBS v2.zip

Looks like the error is -

Code:
2015-12-28 20:16:13, Error CSI 0000002c@2015/12/29:01:16:13.287 (F) d:\win7sp1_gdr\base\wcp\componentstore\storelayout.cpp(11690): Store corruption detected in function ComponentStore::CRawStoreLayout::CheckFamilyIndexForDeadWinnerComponent expression: (null)
  MissingWinningComponentKey on resource [80]"msil_system.web.extensions_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7601.18138_none_3d2dc126fc5c2de5"[gle=0x80004005]

I'm seeing the same thing in this registry key as the previous - default is showing 6.1.7601.18138 and it's a value in there. Two previous values also listed. I haven't touched this registry key, but I assume I need to do this again?

For kicks, did a search of the registry in this area. Found one other key that has 6.1.7601.18138 as the default and shows multiple values of older versions. Wonder if this will pop-up next.

Code:
x86_netfx35linq-system.web.extensions_31bf3856ad364e35_none_f0815387e046761a

Negative, but KB2836943 does (If it matters since they're both .NET stuff.)

Let's see if it will install.

Download and install KB2836942 from here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=39251

The update failed. Here is the CBS.log if it's helpful. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17520956/Sysnative/CBS v3.zip Same error as before, difference resource.

Code:

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put [CODE][/CODE] tags around the log to break up the text.

View attachment SFCFix.zip

When SFCFix has completed, run the System Update Readiness Tool again and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

The SFCFix file was created, but it's blank. . .

When I dragged the zip file over top of the exe, DOS window came up, said it was SFCFix for Sysnatives forum and press any key. Pressed a key, a few lines scrolled by and the window instantly closed.

Didn't want to run it again without checking. . .

Worked that time. SFCFix output here -
