Hello,

I have been having an issue with 1 system file that has been corrupt and is unable to be fixed by sfc /scannow and sfc.fix. It causes my system to have a very slow startup, and sometimes boots to a black screen with a mouse cursor. I've checked the events, and I am seeing Event IDs 7000, 7001, and 6000 mainly. I have tried to run Windows Update and it has failed to install properly.

Here is my sfc.txt:

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's take a look. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

Step#2 - SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
    button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

    Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt
  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Step#3 - System Update Readiness Tool (SUR)
1. Download and run the following file.
2. When it asks you if you wish to install, please answer yes. Note: It could take 15 minutes or more to run. Please don't cancel.
3. You will get an Installation Complete screen when it's done running.
4. Please attach the log from the following location. C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log
Please Note:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Hi Brian, thank you for the support!

After completing all of the steps, it seems like Windows is running smoother now, with no more delays at startup and it seems to be functioning normally. However, I am still getting issues updating Windows as it hangs at the "Downloading Updates" stage whenever I am trying to update (one at a time). Also bear in mind the SUR tool managed to successfully install, and I restarted a few times prior to initiating the updates. I am also getting some of the same errors from the event viewer (Service Control Manager - EventID 7043, WMI - EventID 10). I might need to run chkdsk again to fix any bad sectors.

The three items you've requested are attached below:

That's a lot of errors.

Code:
Summary:
Seconds executed: 801
 Found 1485 errors
  CSI Payload File Missing Total count: 2
  CBS Registry Error Total count: 134
  CBS Watchlist Package Missing Total count: 292
  CBS Watchlist Component Missing Total count: 1057
A repair install may be your best bet but as you stated let's do a chkdsk first.

Step#1 - ChkDsk Scan
1. Click your Start Orb in the lower left of your computer and type cmd in the search box.
2. Once the cmd program is found, right-click on it with your mouse and select Run as administrator as shown below.

3. Answer Yes when asked to allow.
4. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
5. Please type chkdsk and then press enter.
6. Chkdsk will start to run. Please allow it to finish. You will know it is running when you see text as follows.

7. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop. If it's already downloaded to your desktop, just skip this step.
8. Right-click this file and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

Ever since my previous post, I have run chkdsk c: /f a couple of times and it still keeps detecting 112 KB in bad sectors. I've also been able to update 2 recommended windows updates, but it took a very long time (a couple of hours per update). The PC is running pretty well, but I am concerned about the number of errors, as well as the inability to update windows in a timely manner.

Here are my chkdsk results:

Looks like Windows has marked the bad sectors so they can't be used but Let's check your disk health.

GSmartControl
Follow the instructions below to test your hard drive health with GSmartControl:

  • Download GSmartControl and save it on your Desktop;
  • Extract the content of the GSmartControl .zip archive and execute gsmartcontrol.exe;
  • Identify your drive in the list, and double-click on it to bring up it's window (usually you'll find your drive by it's size or it's brand name);
  • Go in the Perform Tests tab, then select Extended Self-test in the Test type drop-down list and click on Execute (this test can take a few hours to complete);
  • Once the test is over, the results will be displayed at the bottom of the window. Please copy and paste these results in your next reply;
  • Also, go in the Attributes tab and if you have any entries highlighted in red or pink, copy and paste their name in your next reply (or take a screenshot of the GSmartControl window and attach it in your next reply);

I ran the application as instructed, and it didn't even finish, reporting a read error. I ran the test a 2nd time and got the same result. Screenshots of the results:

Looks like your hard drive is bad which is causing your issues. Since you have a Western Digital drive let's do another test using the manufacturers tool.

Software and Firmware Downloads | WD Support

Download and run the Data LifeGuard Diagnostics for Windows tool following the instructions at the page in the link above. Let me know the results. Please do a Quick test and then Extended test only. No other options.

Thank you for all of your support. It's not looking good, since even the Western Digital application found bad sectors and when I tried to repair them, it was unable to. It couldn't even finish the scan.

Hi Brian,

Thank you for all of your help and patience in supporting this issue. It looks like you are correct, as I have been experiencing Disk Read Errors as of today, and after a couple of reboots, I was able to start Windows. Fortunately, I backed up most of the files, but will be replacing the HD soon. Thank you again.
