Hi there! I'm having an issue with Windows Update that not only isn't letting me update at all but it making new devices I plug in have no drivers, due to being unable to download them from Windows Update. I did some finicking with the dism and the install.wim, but it doesn't seem to have solved the problem... I'm still getting the error code 0x800703F1 on my updates.

I followed the instructions on the sticky so I have the information that is required!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Let's see what we can do. Please start with the following so I can get a new log with the data I need.

Step#1 - DISM /RestoreHealth Scan
Warning:this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Right-click on the Start
    w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
  2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter. If prompted to overwrite the existing file go ahead.
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Please zip/upload to this thread.
Please Note:: if the file is too big (over 7MB) to upload to your next post, please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.

Looks like you may have hive corruption.

Code:
2016-05-26 12:22:29, Error CBS Failed to load offline store from boot directory: '\\?\T:\' and windows directory: '\\?\GLOBALROOT\Device\HarddiskVolumeShadowCopy2\Windows\' [HRESULT = 0x800703f1 - [COLOR=#ff0000]ERROR_BADDB[/COLOR]]

Please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

Thanks. Let's take a look at another hive.

1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When the command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command(s) into it one at a time, then press Enter after each.
echo f | xcopy /H c:\windows\system32\smi\store\machine\schema.dat %userprofile%\desktop\schema.dat
attrib -s -h %userprofile%\desktop\schema.dat

3. After you hit enter on the 1st line above it should say 1 File(s) copied. If it says Sharing Violation or In-Use or anything like that, please reboot and do these steps again.
4. At this point there should be a file on your desktop named schema.dat. Please right-click on this file and select Send To...Compressed (zipped folder) to zip it up.
5. Please attach the zip file to this post. If it is too large to attach (over 7MB) you may upload to SendSpace and just provide the link.

Thanks. Please do the following as I suspect issues with your disk.

Step#1 - ChkDsk Scan
1. Right-click your Start button and select Command Prompt (Admin). Answer Yes to allow if the User Account Control dialog comes up.
2. You should now have a black window open that you can type in to.
3. Please type chkdsk and then press enter.
4. Chkdsk will start to run. Please allow it to finish. You will know it is running when you see text as follows.
Chkdsk.JPG

5. Download ListChkdskResult.exe by SleepyDude and save it on your desktop. If it's already downloaded to your desktop, just skip this step.
6. Right-click this file and select Run as administrator (Allow if prompted)and a text file will open (and also be saved on the desktop as ListChkdskResult.txt).
Please copy the contents of this file and paste into your next post.

Here you go!

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.

Thank you. I need the following info.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Repeat the steps from Post#2.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as DISM fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.
11908d1430506241-windows-updates-fail-repeatedly-stop-jpg

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Three updates!

  • Cumulative &Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-Based Systems (KB31856421)
  • Logitech - WebCam - Logitech USB Camera (HD Pro Webcam C920)
  • Microsoft - Other hardware - Microsoft Wireless Router Module

I have to use the wushowhide tool, right? Let's see...

Nope, still erroring out. "Installation Failure: Windows failed to install the following update with error 0x800703F1: Cumulative Update for Windows 10 Version 1511 for x64-based Systems (KB3156421)."

I believe the disk corruption you had on 5/17/2016 is the cause of this issue. I believe it can be resolved by doing the following which is an inplace upgrade of Windows 10. No documents or programs will be affected in the process.

1. Download the Media Creation Tool and save this to your desktop. Go ahead and run this as well. Note: Click the Download tool now button when you get to this link.
2. Accept the License Agreement
3. Keep the default Upgrade this PC option and click Next.
4. Let this process complete the upgrade to the newest build and let me know when complete.
