Hello,

I have problems with Windows Update which does not complete successfully installation of KB3121461 and KB2952664.
Upon reboot, the "Configuring Windows Update" part fails and rollback, then reboot.
I tried to install those updates one by one but it does not change anything.

Please find as attachment:
- CheckSUR.log
- SFCFix.txt
- CBS.log.7z.zip (enclosed in a 7-Zip file to be more compact)

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi Masamune2k :)

My name is Aura and I'll be assisting you with your issue. I'll work on a first fix once I get home tonight, since I don't have access to my VMs at work.

Alright follow the instructions below please.

Uninstall a Windows Update - Command Prompt
Follow the instructions below to uninstall a Windows Update manually via the command prompt.
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1 and Windows 10, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below (you can copy/paste it, to paste in the command prompt, right-click inside it and select Paste):
    Code:
    wusa /uninstall /KB:2952664
  • Let me know the outcome of the command: either it uninstall the update or either it says that the update isn't installed on the system;

Thanks Aura.

I confirm that the uninstall process finished (apparently) successfully.
It required a reboot and the "Preparing to Configure Windows" went to 100% and seemed to complete OK.

Good :) Do you have any other update to install?

Actually, as I mention in the thread subject, both KB3121461 and KB2952664 are installing but cause consistently Error 8004402F.

Here is the flow of the installation/rollback of those updates:
- KB2952664/KB3121461 installs and require to reboot to finish install process
- I reboot manually
- Message "Configuring Windows Updates" appears
- It stops several seconds at "77%", then "Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes." appears
- Reboot
- Message "Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes." appears
- Reboot
- Message "Configuring Windows Updates" appears
- It stops several seconds at "30%", then "Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes." appears
- Reboot
- Message "Configuring Windows Updates" appears
- It stops several seconds at "67%", then "Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes." appears
- Reboot
- Message "Failure configuring Windows Updates" appears
- At last, I can Login...!!!
- In Windows Updates history, both KB2952664/KB3121461 appears as "Failed" with Error Code 8004402F

Uninstalling KB2952664 beforehand as you suggested does not seem to change anything to the above flow.

Note also that I'm in a working environment so I cannot ignore those KB2952664/KB3121461 updates, and they are pushed to my computer almost every day (using MS SCCM Software Center)!
So I want to find a way to fix their installation.
I also tried to install them manually (with offline installer) one by one, with no more success: each of these updates requires reboot, then leads to a "Failure configuring Windows Updates. Reverting changes." message and Reboot again.

Did you seek assistance from your IT department for that issue? And do you have authorization from your company to seek outside assistance for this?

Hi Aura,

As a first step, and being a "advanced user", I prefer to fix things myself.
I don't have any particular authorization, but I have administrative rights on my computer so I can virtually do anything.
The problem is that I don't have restoration point before the issue started (some months ago, but at this time the SCCM was not in place). I'm almost sure (from colleagues' experience) that IT dept will simply require to re-install my computer which means many hours/days of work lost in IT assistance/re-installation/backup/restore, etc.

Of course, I would understand if you cannot help me under these circumstances.
But, if possible, I would still appreciate some hints...

I'm a tier 2 technical support myself for a big company, so you could see me as the same kind of IT guy that works for your company right now. Personally, we don't allow our users to seek external assistance online for the computer-related issues, everything must go through us. The reason for that is simple: we want to make sure that we have full control on the system and that the user doesn't end up doing something he's not supposed to do (even less when that user have Admin Rights and can do whatever he wants on his system without restriction).

This being said, is there any reason as to why your IT department is forcing the KB2952664 on your system? Do they know what it's used for?
