Giant windows update problem..

Hi,

So initially I noticed a problem when I couldn't install the windows 7 service 1 pack ( as well as many updates ), when I tried the windows update standalone installer gave me the error "The update is not applicable to your computer".

So I checked in my installed updates in control panel only to see that it shows "No updates are installed on this computer". When I go on update history, however, I see all the dozens of updates installed ( and many times the same update will have been downloaded multiple times yet still not showing in control panel.. ).

It also seems as though windows update is blocked, it's asking me to update 11 important updates but every time I install them and restart my computer to complete the installations they're nowhere to be found and windows update asks me again for the same update ( although it also says in a popup that windows 7 has successfully installed updates.. ).

I tried many things such as sfc /scannow in cmd only to get "Windows Resource Protection could not start the repair device". I tried replacing my components file in system 32 config with a new one, still nothing better.

Here are my SFCFix results :
"SFCFix version 3.0.0.0 by niemiro.Start time: 2016-12-07 11:48:37.722
Microsoft Windows 7 Service Pack 1 - amd64

I've also did the CBS collecting file with SFCFix and the script text thing since my files are too large to upload..
I fear that a complete full restore might be the only option left for me, if anything can be done help would be truly appreciated!

Thanks!

Quick edit: I also downloaded the windows update readiness tool it installed an update and then.. nothing else new or better same as before..

Hi Leonix,

What has been done with the COMPONENTS hive that there are multiple copies? Which one is the original?

Hi!

The original components file is the ".bad" one, I've been told by someone to replace it by one he sent me ( which is the COMPONENTSNEW ) to see if it might fix it, but it didn't.
I don't really know where the other component file comes from..

Please rename the 256KB components file to components.empty and rename COMPONENTS.bad to COMPONENTS

After that is complete, try running SFCFix again.

Hello,
Here's the new SFCFix report ( I now have 3 components: COMPONENTS, COMPONENTSNEW and components.empty ):

That's better. There might be corruption in the SOFTWARE hive, let's take a look at the Component Based Servicing branch.

Export Component Based Servicing

  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing\
  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file ComponentBasedServicing (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.
  7. Right Click on the ComponentBasedServicing file on your Desktop and choose Send To -> Compressed (Zipped) Folder.

Once done please upload ComponentBasedServicing.zip via DropBox OneDrive or SendSpace

Thanks.

Please run the System Update Readiness Tool again. Once it has completed, attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log with your reply.

Sorry for the delay.

Let's try this:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the file below, SFCFix.zip, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.zip - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.zip.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

View attachment SFCFix.zip

Once SFCFix has completed making the changes, try running it again without a script (just double click on SFCFix.exe) and then attach SFCFix.txt and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.log when it completes.

Hi! So first is the contexts of the the first SFCFix.txt:

After that, I ran it again without any script and I got this ( the drive link includes the other SFCfix.txt and the CheckSUR.log : Update your browser to use Google Drive - Drive Help
It seems like the CheckSUR.log hasn't changed since last time ( last date modified is 19 december ).

Thanks again!

Once this is complete, try downloading the latest version of the System Update Readiness Tool. If the download completes successfully, run SURT.
Let me know if this produces an error or not.

Hi! Sorry I couldn't answer back. I started the system update readiness tool and it started doing updates, while Windows also reminded me with popups at the top right of my screen that it couldn't find any updates, when I clicked on them I arrived here:
error windows update.PNG

I don't see any SURT application downloaded on my computer though.

I still see that there are no updates installed on my computer while the update history is full of updates, but at least SURT downloaded fully this time!

Let's try reinstalling the update.

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download the update MSU here: Download Security Update for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB2813347) from Official Microsoft Download Center
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp

replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand {update name}.msu -f:* C:\temp

replace {update name} with the name of the MSU file downloaded in step 1

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\{update name}.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?

  7. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
  8. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  9. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post please.

Hi again.

Trying to simply install the update obviously didn't work and I got the error from the Windows Standalone Update Installer : This update is not applicable to your computer.

So I tried copying the MSU file and did the steps as you told me however I didn't get the message I should have received in step 6. What I got was this :
DISM error.PNG

If it's any help, I've included the DISM.log file here

Looks like it's a rather complicated problem :(

First, copy the MSU file to C:\temp then try the commands

cd C:\temp

expand Windows6.1-KB3813347-x64.msu -f:* C:\temp

DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\Windows6.1-KB3813347-x64.cab

Let me know if you get a different message this time :)
