Hi,

I have turned off windows update about a year ago when Microsoft was forcing people to upgrade to Windows 10 (stupid, I know). I remember changing some values in the Registry but can't remember the details. Now that the forced upgrade is over, I am trying to turn on auto update again. However, Windows now keep asking me to restart and won't check for new updates.

Separately, my Windows Defender won't turn on and the error code is 0x800106ba. I am also prompted to restart the computer.

My WU info is as follows. Thanks in advance!

Re: [Win7SP1 x64] Win.Upd. keeps asking me to restart and won't check for new updates

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Are you still in need of assistance?
Yes pls, been waiting for assistance! I have got my laptop checked by a friend who knows IT but he said there r no files corrupted. I wonder why your scan shows otherwise?

Please start with the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

I don't know what you mean by that. Can you paste the contents of SFCFix.txt into your next reply?

It doesn't look like you did this correctly. You need to drag the SFCScript.txt file (from Post#6) and drop it over the SFCFix.exe.
