I recently inherited a 2008 R2 server and found it did not have SP1 on it. Tried to install; appears to get all the way through the install, then during the preparing or customizing screen when it counts to 100%, just as it gets to/near 100%, it fails and reverts. When I log in to Windows, I get the error that the installation was not successful, unspecified error. More details shows the error as E_FAIL(0x80004005)

I ran the system update readiness tool and sfcscan. No change.

I'm attached the usual logs. Any help is appreciated!

Are there any antivirus products installed?

Please zip and upload the entire C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ folder, then include the link here.

Is this using the offline installer?

0x70 = 112 which is not enough free space.

Try freeing up some space on the hidden boot partition if possible :)

SWEET! That was it! You guys are amazing!

Damn AppAssure (Their old backup system) drops log files in system volume info to track changes or something. Does that on every drive and will just take ALL available space. That was it. Once I removed that, worked like a charm!

Good to know! Hopefully anyone with the same problem will come across this thread :)
