Hi, I am trying to upgrade Powershell from v2.0 to v4.0 on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 in order to upgrade Active Directory DirSync to Azure AD Connect, but am not able to install Windows Management Framework 4.0. I have also tried WMF 3.0 and WMF 5.0 with the same results. The error I get is:

Windows update "Update for Windows (KB2819745)" could not be installed because of error 2147956481 "The referenced assembly could not be found." (Command line: ""C:\Windows\system32\wusa.exe" "C:\Users\it\Downloads\Windows6.1-KB2819745-x64-MultiPkg.msu" ")

I have .Net Framework 4.7 installed and I have run CheckSUR and SFC. CheckSUR found 7 problems and fixed them all and SFC found no problems. However, the error is still the same after the CheckSUR repair.

I have linked a copy of my CBS log from dropbox. Dropbox - CBS.log Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Sysnative. Sorry for the delay. Are you still in need of assistance?

Hi, yes I have still been unable to get PowerShell updated to 4.0. Thanks!

Hello and welcome

Due to the precise nature of your corruption, you will receive help from a user named softwaremaniac. He's one of our senior trainees here who's in his final phase of his studies and needs to gain some real world experience in specific areas of Windows Update. This means that he'll be assisting you, but that I will first need to double check and approve his fixes before he posts them to you. If anything this is a good thing for you because it means that you've got at least two of us watching over your thread, but it will unfortunately add a slight delay between each reply. I hope that you understand and can accept the need for us to train up new members in this way in order to carry on doing what we do here, however, if for any reason you object to this setup, I will happily take on your thread myself.

Thank you very much for your understanding. We'll be with you very shortly.

That sounds great. Thank you!

Re: [WinServer2008R2SP1] Can't Install WinManagement Framework 4.0 (or 5.0)

Hello and welcome!

Open Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows Features On or Off.

Uncheck Windows Powershell checkbox and click OK. Reboot and let me know if updates work now.

Re: [WinServer2008R2SP1] Can't Install WinManagement Framework 4.0 (or 5.0)

Thank you for taking on this thread.

Where I am on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, following your directions opens the Server Manager and the only Powershell option I can remove is the feature "Active Directory Module for Windows Powershell". Do you want me to un-check the box for this feature?

Re: [WinServer2008R2SP1] Can't Install WinManagement Framework 4.0 (or 5.0)

It looks like I did miss the one other option further down. "Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE)" was grayed out as a result of not currently being turned on. Is this the one that we want turned off?
Sever Manager Features.JPG

I attempted to turn it on, but received the following error:

"Installation failed.

Features:

Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE)
Error: Attempt to install Windows PowerShell Integrated Scripting Environment (ISE) failed with error code 0x80073701. The referenced assembly could not be found"

CBS log was uploaded to dropbox and is linked below.

  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it and press enter.

Re: [WinServer2008R2SP1] Can't Install WinManagement Framework 4.0 (or 5.0)

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Open up elevated command prompt and run the following command:

Code:
[COLOR=#333333]
DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName=ActiveDirectory-PowerShell
[/COLOR]
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as the command fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log.

Re: [WinServer2008R2SP1] Can't Install WinManagement Framework 4.0 (or 5.0)

Have you installed any other important updates that show up in Windows Update?

Re: [WinServer2008R2SP1] Can't Install WinManagement Framework 4.0 (or 5.0)

Yes, all of the important updates seem to be installing fine. The only failed ones I have over the past month or so are for WMF 3.0, 4.0, and 5.0.
