[SOLVED] [7SP1 x64] Error 80073701 windows update

The meltdown/specture update failed to install with error 0x80073701

As per forum posting rule,

1) sfc /scannow CBS.log result
Download CBS sfc scannow.log from Sendspace.com - send big files the easy way
Yes, Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them.

2) Then I ran sfcfix as recommended.

Weird, sfcfix didn't find anything wrong while sfc /scannow did?

3) Just to be sure, I ran Windows6.1-KB947821-v34-x64, SURT
These are the CBS + CheckSUR logs

4) CBS log when I use Windows Update to install kb4056894 which ended up in error 80073701

Can't find it at Program and Features, Installed Update list.

I tried to uninstall via command line wusa, no luck either.

Then I tried to install the update and it said the update is not applicable?


The problem with 80073701 started after the town electricity was cut off suddenly when I was installing November or December Update, can't recall which month. I recalled Windows displayed something about 'rolling back update' and it never asked to reinstall the update. I didn't expect Jan 2018 update would be affected by the power cut from few months ago.

OK, please do the following.

FRST Registry Search
 1. Click your Start button and choose Control Panel.
2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
3. Select the Programs group.
4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog. Wait until this dialog populates with information.
Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps.
5. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
6. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
7. Copy and paste KB4048957into the Search box and click the Search Registry button.
8. When the scan is complete a notepad window will open with the results. Please copy and paste the contents in your next reply. If for some reason notepad doesn't open the file should be
saved on your desktop named Search.txt.
9. You may close any remaining open windows now.

Please do the following.

FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
2. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
3. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
4. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply.

After running the fixlist.txt with FRST64, I am able to install updates from Windows Updates again.
