Hi all,
I'm unable to update from Windows 10 Home 1607 to 1709 - the auto update feature has been failing for months now. It usually fails and returns the message "Something went wrong - error code 0x8007007e"
I have of course tried to fix the problem myself, but unfortunately nothing I've tried has worked. The error code that I'm returned is apparently not uncommon, and I've tried to follow various suggested fixes over the past few months, but to no avail.
Steps I've tried before running Windows update:
- Disabling anti-virus
- Running SFC /scannow (can't do this, "windows resource protection could not start the repair service")
- Performing a "clean boot" through msconfig
- Control Panel -> System and Security -> Fix Problems with Windows Update - Ran the trouble shooter and fixed problems (Windows Update still failed after the troubleshooter fixed some problems successfully)
- Downloaded and ran the Windows Update troubleshooter wu170509.diagcab (Windows update still failed)
- Tried to upgrade to Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7 (update failed)
- Deleted the folder "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" and ran Windows Update again (it still failed)
- Disconnected my wireless wifi card. I have an ASUS PC and found out that removing the wireless wifi card solved windows update problems for some users (this didn't work for me though)
Upgrading ASUS CM6870 to Windows 10 Creators Edition or April 2018 - Microsoft Community
- Disconnected my printer, which is connected to my PC by USB, because I've read elsewhere that connected USB devices can cause update to fail
-I've tried to download specific updates that I'm having issues with, as detailed on the Update Status in Windows Settings - either I've been unable to find these or failed to install them,
Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.1 for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64 (KB4033393) - Error 0x8000ffff
Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4033631) - Error 0x8000ffff
Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4049411) - Error 0x8000ffff
Update for Windows 10 Version 1607 for x64-based Systems (KB4091461) - Error 0x8000ffff
==============
I think that covers most of what I've tried - the result of any of these is that windows update seems to fall over at around 80%, and then I get the dreaded 0x8007007e error. I think my PC has now given up trying to update daily. I really don't wanna have to wipe everything clean and reset my PC to its factory settings. And even if I were to do this, I'd be restored to a much earlier version of Windows from 2015, and no doubt I'd have trouble updating to the latest version anyway.
By hook or crook, despite being far from an expert, I've managed to sort out every PC issue I've ever had - this windows update problem has me totally stumped though. Nothing has been successful. I'm not IT savvy enough to be able to pinpoint what's causing update to fail.
I've attached my zipped CBS logs - if anyone could help me get round this problem, I'd be eternally grateful! :smile9:
Many thanks,
IAB.
