Hi,

I am hitting a wall trying to install June's security rollup patch on one of my Win2008R2 servers. After a LOT of digging and troubleshooting, I see an error in the CBS.log file:
CBS Failed to find file: amd64_microsoft-windows-s..-downlevel.binaries_31bf3856ad364e35_6.3.9600.18860_none_5f7c208eff6532ba\MsSpellCheckingFacility.exe [HRESULT = 0x80070002 - ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND]

I haven't found any useful resources online that can explain the error or what to do to fix it. Can you guys help me?

Thanks,
Ze'ev

Hello and welcome to Sysnative!

Start with the following please:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFixScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFixScript.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFixScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFixScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

System Updates no longer work for Server 2008 R2

Hi,

I've been reading through this thread and see that you are successfully helping others get their patching back on track. Could you help me as well? The server stopped installing patches at 2018-05 monthly rollup (KB4103718) and neither that nor any subsequent patches install correctly. I've tried resetting the SoftwareDownloads folder, running sfc /scannow, nothing really helps. I see where the cbs.log file is complaining about a file missing, but I don't know where to get it from to resolve the issue. What do you recommend I do at this point (besides scrapping the server which is a DC and raising a new one)?

Thanks,
Zeev

Sorry, I forgot I asked about this a while ago. I ran the SFCFixScript you sent, here are the results:

Hello! I have merged your new thread with your old one. There is no reason for you to have multiple threads open for the same issue.

Please do the following:

Install Update with DISM

  1. Download the update MSU here: http://download.windowsupdate.com/c/...2ff4bf6df8.msu
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp

replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand windows6.1-kb4054518-x64_290d02e1edc77bd5e809f867fc683d2ff4bf6df8.msu -f:* C:\temp

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\windows6.1-kb4054518-x64.cab
  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
Restart Windows to complete this operation.
Do you want to restart the computer now (Y/N)?
  7. Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.

If you receive any other message:
  8. Right-click on the Command Prompt window and click Select All, this will invert all of the colours by selecting the text, now press enter. All of this text is now copied.
  9. Paste (Ctrl+V) it into your next post.
  10. Zip and attach C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Thanks for merging the threads.

That did it! How did you know which patch had to be applied manually?

Thanks very much!

Thanks for letting me know! I inspected the log and saw that a certain file was missing. Then traced it back to an update and voila!

How do you trace it back? If this happens with another server, I don't want to have to impose on you all the time to figure out which update needs to be reapplied.

Thanks,
