Re: Windows Update not working

G'day niemero.

I have read this thread with interest, because I have the same problem - Windows Update does not work any more. My guess is that I might have a similar problem as discussed in this thread, because the malaise started when I replaced the hard disk of my laptop with a new one using imaging software. The trouble was that the old disk had a few bad sectors and I am not sure what the imaging software did with those.

The effects I am seeing are so far:

- Windows Update has stopped working. It gives me a window telling me that the service is not started. Starting it does not help nor do a lot of other things I tried.
- Microsoft Security Essentials refuses to update its signatures etc. I uninstalled, but when I tried to re-install it it could not do it.

So for now I installed AdAware's protection, but it would really be good to get Windows Update back.
Sure, I could re-install Windows but that would be rather painful, because I am running some exotic science applications.

If you would be at all be prepared to assist me, I'd be happy to send you my CBS.log file. Or are you aware of a program that fixes bitshifts in the Registry ?

Regards,
Jorg (sorry for my username, but my surname is indeed "Hacker")

Hello again Jorg :)

Welcome to Sysnative!

I will happily take a look. However, I would like to say a couple of things first. If your problems really are caused by your old and dying hard disk (rather than something unrelated), it is possible that there are too many point corruptions for me to fix. I will happily take a look, and hopefully be able to help you, but please be aware that the corruptions might be too extensive for me to fix. But I will give it my very best shot.

There is currently no automated tool to detect bitshifts, I will have to do this manually. But there is one in the works which can detect *most* bitshifts. But your thread will be done manually.

Right, please download FSS from here: Farbar Service Scanner Download

...run it, put a checkmark in every box, and click Scan. Then post me the log which opens.

It certainly doesn't look everything we need to, but it is a good starting point for us.

Thank you!

Richard

Hello Richard,

Many thanks, that's extremely nice of you to spend time on this. I am aware that there may be other potential problems, but so far all other applications seem to work just fine. So maybe I'm lucky.

I did as you said and here is the FSS.txt file.

Cheers,
Jorg.

Hello again :)

No problem. Nothing much wrong in that log. Let's bring out a bigger tool.

• Download the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft ->here<- Save the tool to a convenient location as it may be necessary to run it again.
• After the download has completed, double-click the file and wait while it initializes.
• Click Yes to begin installation.

Once it has finished (please be patient, it may take 45mins to an hour to complete), please:

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.

Now please go and additionally copy C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log into the new CBS folder on your Desktop. Finally:

  1. Right-click on this new CBS folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  2. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  3. Please upload this new CBS.zip file to your next post.

Thank you!

Richard

Hello Richard,

Your instructions are great ! I am doing this at this moment, but downloads are relatively slow here, because I live in a house that has no harwired connection to the outside world, no mains power, no mains water and no copper line phone line. It's great, but things sometimes are a touch slow. Our next neighbor is 2km away !

I will do as you say, but as the scan will also take a while, I might only be able to get to you tomorrow morning my time (it's half past midnight here).

Thanks so much for your help !
Talk to you later.
Jorg.

Hello Richard,

Here I am back already. I downloaded Windows6.1-KB947821-v25-x64.msu and ran it. It said "Preparing the Installer" for about 2 minutes and then went into Error 0xc80000247 . I thought that something might have gone wrong in my download, so I downloaded it again, but that executable had the same problem. Do you know what that error message means ?

Regards, Jorg.

Hello again :)

I know all about slow connections :p It takes me hours to download SURT.

Anyway, please proceed with:

  3. Please upload this new CBS.zip file to your next post.

and I will provide you further instructions then.

Thank you!

Richard

Hello again :)

Pretty much as expected. Datastore error. Let's start simple and work up.

Please download and run this tool: http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9665683

Please DO check the "Aggressive Mode" checkbox.

This might be all that is needed to fix your problem.

Good luck!

Richard

Good morning (your time, I guess), good evening (my time).

Many thanks again for your great help.

I ran the tool, rebooted and then tried a Windows Update, but I got the same Error.
So I guess, we have to "work up".

Cheers,
Jorg.

Hello again :)

Can you please use this tool: Intel® Driver Update Utility

to find and install updates for your Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers.

I have seen your error code caused by an old and buggy version of this driver, before now. Updating them ensures that you do not have one of these old versions.

Thank you!

Richard

Re: Windows Update Not Working - installation-process of IE 9 and 10 fails

Hey guys,

I deinstalled IE on my Windows Server 2008 R2 (SBS 2011). Now I wanted to reinstall IE 9 or IE 10, even the Fix-it-Tool and I get the messages:

IE 9: Setup exit code 0x800F081E (-2146498530)
IE 10: Setup exit code: 0x00009C59 (40025)
Fix it: [Code 8004FE2C]

I extracted already the files of the installer.exe and copied it with "robocopy"-cmd-command into the winsxs-folder, and still not working. Any idea? :O

Thanks,
Uwe
