Hello everyone,

So i have this problem with windows update - it will not find any updates and gives me error code 80070246 after searching for updates for a long time. Earlier, it just gave me the error code before even searching, but i ran some Microsoft FixIt that the official win7 forums directed me to, and now I'm here.

I'm somewhat of a computer novice, but I i get the feeling this problem needs some expertise that I don't have after looking around a bit and doing some troubleshooting of my own.

I realized I had troubles installing other things aside from windows updates. Earlier I've tried to install iTunes and Java, both of which gave me some errors that i didn't think too much about and did not save any screenshots. However, when I noticed windows update isn't working either I figured something might be wrong for real.

Additional information that might be relevant. This laptop had a bad RAM stick earlier, which caused very frequent BSOD's. I replaced the bad RAM and i have installed small programs such as IObit System Care after that.

I've checked these threads for answers but to no avail:
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...s-update-not-working-potential-bitshifts.html
https://www.sysnative.com/forums/windows-update/3791-windows-update-not-working.html

I saw Niemiro asked for FSS and CBS information in those threads, so I'll attach them here at the bottom.

Best Regards

Edit: Can edit this post but not the original one.

Hello fancypants, welcome to Sysnative!

It is an anti spam measure to prevent posts being edited after a certain time period so hopefully that explains the editing issue! Your CheckSUR log is showing that you have registry corruption in your COMPONENTS hive which I will have to fix manually for you.

Upload a file to Dropbox

Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive.

  1. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here
  2. Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website:

    https://www.dropbox.com/install
  3. After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files.

    Favourites%20list.PNG

  4. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon
    icon.jpg
found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox
  5. Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox:

    • C:\Windows\system32\config\COMPONENTS

  6. Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
  7. This will create a .zip
    zip_icon.png
    file in your Public folder.
  8. Right-click on this file and select Dropbox > Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl + V) this link into your next post for me please

Hey Tom,

Thank you for the quick reply :)

Just a quick question - Do you want me to upload the whole \config folder or just the COMPONENTS.* files? I don't have a COMPONENTS folder, there are a few files named COMPONENTS.* though. The \Config folder is 303 MB in size and I don't want to aggravate you by being stupid and uploading the wrong stuff.

Don't worry about it, you will never aggravate either of us, and certainly not through a genuine mistake! We are both very easy-going :)

In answer to your question, you only need to upload the single COMPONENTS file without a file extension. All of those other COMPONENTS.whatever files are not needed.

I hope this helps :)

Hehe, I'm just impressed with the service you're providing and want to oblige. From BSOD stuff to friendly dropbox tutorials. Never seen anything like this :)

Hope this is the right stuff.

Not a problem :)

It is always a pleasure to work with someone like you who makes an effort to help us and is just generally a great person to work with :)

Right, let's try the simple fix first. This may or may not work, but there is no need to jump straight into the hard stuff when the simple thing may be all that's needed.

Please download the attached registry fix. Open the .zip folder, and double click on the enclosed .reg file. Click Yes to import, and click OK when you get a success message (or let me know of an error).

Then please re-try Windows Update.

Thank you!

Richard

I will do my best!

So, I got an error... English is not my mother tongue and Win7 is installed in Swedish, but I'll translate the error message freely and hope it makes sense.
"C:\Users\Per\AppData\Local\Temp\Rar$DIa0.201\RegistryFix1.reg could not be imported. An error occured when trying to access the registry"

I right-clicked the file and looked around for authorization settings, but couldn't figure it out. Should i copy-paste it into place?

/Fancy

EDIT. I am the administrator of this PC and have full access to make any changes.

Hello again :)

The error makes perfect sense - and you speak very good English :)

Let's try putting the script through in a slightly different way. Please:

Download a copy of SFCFixScript.txt attached to this post, and save it to your Desktop.
Then download a copy of SFCFix.exe from here: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/downloads/sfcfix/, and also save it to your Desktop.
Single click on SFCFixScript.txt and drag and drop it on top of SFCFix.exe. SFCFix will open and perform a fix.
A logfile called SFCFix.txt will open (and be saved to your Desktop). Please copy and paste the report into your next reply.

Thank you!

Richard

Windows update just popped up by itself and showed some will to live. The checking for updates and downloading processes are now working, but it seems to get stuck at the installation part. I'll give it some more time and if that doesn't work I'll try a reboot. If that fails I'll bug you with another SURT log. Either way, I'll keep you posted :)

Allright, the lowdown.
I had roughly 67 updates pending, 65 of which downloaded and installed correctly. The other two were optional (drivers for my wifi and modem) and they got error 800F0246. I'm guessing that is no biggie and doesn't need solving. Or does it?
iTunes now installed correctly aswell, so the fix has solved other major problems besides the windows update one.

This whole experience has been like a nice first date (no homo, as the rappers say to avoid confusion). You guys are stars.

Thanks a million! Or as we say in Sweden - Tusen Tack! (means thanks a thousand ;))

/Fancypants

PS. I noticed I can mark the thread as *solved*, so I'll go ahead and do that. DS

That is great news!

I wouldn't worry too much about the driver updates if I were you. That error is unlikely to cause you significant problems with non-driver updates. In fact, you may find that they succeed when not grouped with the other 65 updates.

If, however, you are having problems with either of those two devices, I would probably recommend just getting the drivers from the manufacturer's website. In the unlikely event that they won't install, or you particularly want to fix these errors for other reasons, I will take a couple of logs and see what needs to be done.

But if I were you, just right click on them and hide them. If you ever change your mind and want it fixed, just come back here, but IMO, we are best not fiddling with what is working well.

You mentioned iTunes issues which are now resolved. Any other problems still a problem you want me/us to take a look at?

Other than that, thank you for marking it as solved and for being such a great person to work with :)

Take care!

Richard

Working on a sunday Richard? I hope you're getting paid.

I hadn't fully realized I had a serious problem with installing things on my laptop, just thought there might've been some compatibility issues with certain programs or something like that. This fix, however, solved all of that. Installing any program now works like a charm.

I'll follow your advice and stay away from the driver updating business. My internet is working without a hitch and I'm not obsessive/compulsive about having the latest drivers.

Take care fellas. I'm more than grateful.

Yep, working Sundays! I work pretty much any day of the year to be honest, even Christmas Eve/Christmas Day, etc. In fact, forums often get a fair number of questions on Christmas Day or the day after about how to setup a new computer, problems installing a new game, etc. etc.

And no, I don't get paid. :) I just do it for the fun of it, because I learn lots of things/meet problems I would otherwise not, get to know people across the world I would otherwise not, and because I like being able to help people :)

Take care :)

I feel bad now...

I'm handing in my thesis in the next few weeks and I'm chasing a job at the moment. I'll make sure to make a donation once I get a salary, but at the moment I'm living off savings.

More power to ya'!

Don't feel bad! I genuinely do enjoy it. After all, nobody is forcing me to work here, and certainly nobody is forcing me to work Sundays, I just do it because it is how I like spending my time.

Good luck with your thesis and getting a job! I have at least some idea what it is like, being a student myself at the moment.

However, there is perhaps something you could do to help us if you so wished. You may have noticed that we are a fairly new forum. Therefore, we particularly need members and questions to get us off the ground. So, if you have any friends with computer problems, please tell them about us :p

I understand that you do not come from a country which has English as an official language, but in all honesty, we usually manage to communicate with even those who have to use Google Translate.

:)

Richard

Thanks for the well wishes!

You're doing a great job :)

My online footprint is kind of small since i quit online gaming, but I'll make sure to direct any traffic I can this way. You could probably help a Swedish chimp fix his pc, so I'm sure you'll get all the traffic you want and then some.

Au revoir

I appreciated the help on this thread. I downloaded and ran SFCFix, and it does not seem to get very far. I have copy/pasted my output below. Could anyone help to fix my windows update?

Thank you
