[SOLVED] Update error 80073712 in win7 32 bit system

hi, I m getting error 80073712 in win update. i m using win 7 sp1 32bit ultimate. few days ago some updates appeared repeatedly asking to install though every time it show ''installed successfully'' msg after each update. i tried to install them manually offline but it re-appeared again. after few days IE9 became unable to launch. i got error ''no installed updates found in ur computer'' in update folder so i couldnt un-install IE9. Now my windows not getting any updates but MSE gets updates regularly. I tried sfc scannow cmd enabling win module installer service setting to manual from eleveted cmd prompt as well as from repair windows cmd prompt booting from installation disc. But every time it returned me error msg without any scan.'' requested action couldnt be completed due to protection''. I tried ms fixit tools for win update and windows update readyness tools but no luck. Is there any way to avoid re-install of windows in order to solve this problem? please reply/

Hello RDX913, welcome to Sysnative!

Export CBS folder

• Click the Start button
  
  then click Computer.
• Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
• Find and double click on the Logs folder.
• Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
• Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
• Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
• A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Attach the file, CBS.zip, to your next post please!

Ah the good old STATUS_SXS_COMPONENT_STORE_CORRUPT error. This can bring some very interesting problems into the scene and unfortunately for you, is never a good sign at all! But, speculation is nothing so let's see what the problem really is:



Upload a file to Dropbox

Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive.

1. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here
2. Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website:
   
   https://www.dropbox.com/install
   
3. After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files.
   
   
   
   
   
   
4. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon
   
   found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox
5. Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox:
   
   • C:\Windows\system32\config\components (it has no file extension)
     
     
     
6. Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
7. This will create a .zip
   
   file in your Public folder.
8. Right-click on this file and select Dropbox > Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl + V) this link into your next post for me please

Hi RDX913,

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but your COMPONENTS hive has been irreversibly damaged. Usually the file size of a COMPONENTS hive is roughly 48MB, yours is 256KB so it is missing ~99.5% of the data it should contain!

As much as I hate to say it, the only way this will be fixed is to do a clean install: https://www.sysnative.com/forums/wi...-install-windows-windows-7-windows-vista.html

Oh ok . Thanks for giving ur valuable times. Btw cant this 'component' file be replaced from another same config system computer? Or if any trick that could do a repair through sfc scan? ...May be these questions sound silly now

Hi RDX913,

The only stupid question is the one left unasked :)

Your COMPONENTS hive is specific to your computer as it depends on what updates are installed on your computer. So replacing it with one from another computer will make Windows Update very confused.

SFC, simplistically, works by comparing your system files to what they should be (this data is stored in the COMPONENTS hive) so it can't be used to repair the file it uses to repair files - if that makes any sense.
