Deciphering SFC error log after user profile and other Windows 7 application issues

Hi.
My wife's laptop had become increasingly frustrating to use as the root partition on the machine's sole hdd was filled with more and more data. I proceeded to make changes to her user profile so all user data was transferred and consequently saved to the drive's secondary partition (D:).

I won't bore you with too many details but one course of action I took was some advised registry editing (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList) which seems to have made my wife's user profile inaccessible (e.g. cannot logon).

Further, Windows issues within the other administrative account (Manager) have surfaced.
In this account many Windows applications formerly found via typing in start menu were not being found. Although I believe I have fixed this issue by changing indexing options and reindexing, some applications (e.g. 'Create an account') will not execute from this search, or from another place of access such as control panel.

Consequently I thought it was time to do a repair on Windows and almost forgot about the SFC option until I read some online info on fixing a corrupted Windows installation. SFC did find corrupt files however the message states that some of them are not able to be fixed. Thanks to anyone who can tell me exactly what is happening from my log file:

Hi,

Since I've we've got a flat tyre on our car, it doesn't look like I'll be going away for another hour, so I thought I'd put the hour to good use :p

There were a lot of repairs completed by SFC, with only one corruption it couldn't repair. I don't think this is going to the the fix for your user profile issue(s), but it's a good place to start. Once this is repaired, you know that the Windows files are not corrupt. :)

Thanks Stephen

Wasn't expecting such a prompt response! :thumbsup2:
I'll give your directions a go in the next 24 hours and let all know of any progress.

Hi,

If it wasn't for a flat tyre, I would not have been able to get to you so quickly! :) Thought I'd put the spare time to good use!

Great, let me know how the fix goes. Hopefully it should fix the corruption. If not, I'll deal with it when I get home again.

Kind regards,
Stephen

Hi,

Hmmm, the script seems to have failed to complete successfully. Could you please try once more, using the same link. Remember to drag the whole .zip folder onto SFCFix.exe.

Looks like second time's a charm for script execution:

Hi,

Let's keep chasing this!

Unfortunately, I think you used the wrong file (or I gave the wrong link, which is just as likely!). Could you please use this .zip file --> https://www.dropbox.com/s/lftf58siomfcvsn/SFCFix.zip. Remember to drag the whole zip file onto SFCFix as before.

This should be the last time, fingers crossed!!

Stephen

To add to what Stephen said, if you are finding it difficult with all of these files with the same name, you might want to delete everything you have currently downloaded from here except SFCFix.exe, then download the one file linked in Stephen's latest post, and then try again.

Richard

Thanks guys. I think it was probably my fault as I don't remember downloading the new file at all :confused2:. I'm battling a severe head cold at the moment and did the last process late at night and after taking night-time Sudafed. So .. yeah, not thinking that clearly at the time.

Nonetheless I have acted on Richard's advice and hope this result is more fruitful (...and from the correct script :r1:):

Hi HalfaClue,

Sorry for the delay! So many threads, so little time! I've got an exam tomorrow morning so I can only stop by quickly, and this will probably be the last time I do so this side of my exam.

Your CBS log shows one pointless file as corrupt, but we'll fix it anyway:

Cheers man. I would have been appeased if all you did was acknowledge my post and put off providing any fix until after your exam/s prep. and completion.
As a mature age student who finish a science degree a couple of years ago I know how much focus one has to put into these endeavours!
That is to say - you've gone above and beyond to provide the latest.
Thanks!! :thumbsup2: .... and I hope the exam went well.

Hi HalfAClue,

You have a very interesting case here, and an issue that runs deeper than it may first appear.

After reviewing this thread, I have noticed a pattern emerging. As soon as we repair one file, a different one becomes corrupt. Fixing that one results in the original being corrupt. These files have nothing in common as far as I can tell.

For instance, in your latest CBS log, would you like to take a guess as to which file is corrupt? Yup, pretty_peacock.jpg, the same file we fixed earlier.

From the start of the thread, the following files have been reported corrupt in separate logs:

Code:
1) \SystemRoot\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-n..ce_iassdo.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_e86c80b89a3f77b7\iassdo.dll.mu

3) \SystemRoot\WinSxS\x86_microsoft-windows-n..ce_iassdo.resources_31bf3856ad364e35_6.1.7600.16385_en-us_e86c80b89a3f77b7\iassdo.dll.mui

Notice the pattern?

If we carry on the same way we are right now, we're going to go nowhere.

This kind of behaviour is often sign of an impending hardware failure. I'm not trying to scare you, but if you don't already have a backup system in place, start backing up your files right now as a matter of importance. Back up your files if possible before running this next step. This is a diagnostic step, so we can get an idea of what the hard drive is like right now, and if it is nearing a failure.

chkdsk /f

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    chkdsk /f

  4. Reboot - this will check the disk. This may take some hours but do not turn the computer off during the disk checking process.
  5. Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) from the link below:

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/12354842/My Tools/ListChkdskResult.exe
  6. Double click on it to run it. It will take a few seconds to scan, then it will open a Notepad window with the log. Copy and paste the contents of this into your next post please!

Hi Stephen.
I've had no outward indications that the hard drive is failing. :smile9: In fact I overhauled the whole laptop 30 months ago with a total dis-assembly and clean up, new ram, new cpu and bigger new drive (with a fresh install of OS). I regularly blow out the fan area of dustbunnies (I think poor airflow killed the original HDD). Further, the drive is regularly defragmented with Diskeeper (A program I run on several other laptops/desktops).

I'm not saying the drive is definitely not failing but physical evidence would seem to support this. The chkdsk log and Belarc Advisor's "disk drive smart status" of healthy also appear to confirm.

I'm not the expert here - but it appears the 'cleanup process' performed on the drive is related more to a bug in chkdsk as opposed to an actual problem. In other words it should be ignored.

Another anomaly worthy of note, and which may help pinpoint the reason for the issues the laptop is having; I have run Windows update about three times recently where the process seems to complete, however, within a day or two Windows update notifies me of pending update files. So, I run update only to find it wants to install the exact same files I'm sure I just installed! (I stopped bothering with WU about three weeks ago)

Thanks for your ongoing concern :)
