Hello. I've been having this problem for awhile and now have some free time to try to get it fixed. My computer can't update Security Update for Windows Vista (KB974318) and I get an error message: "0x80073712". I ran SFC and it stated that "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them." And it specifically noted the CBS.log file. I attached the CBS.log file. Hope you can help! Thank you!

Hello, and welcome to Sysnative!

I'm really sorry for the delay in responding. Thanks for alerting us to it.

Unfortunately, error code 0x80073712 is a really bad sign. Most error codes mean that a certain component is corrupt. We can usually fix them. This error code usually means that every component is corrupt (give or take, it's a bit of an oversimplification but I think you get the idea), and unfortunately that is not fixable in the conventional ways (instead we must look into trying to get a Repair Install to work).

Can you please navigate to C:\Windows\System32\config

and tell me the file size of the COMPONENTS file (no file extension).

Thank you, and I'm really sorry to be the bearer of this news.

Sorry for the late reply as well. This is my parent's computer so I try to get on here when I can to help them out. But here are the sizes of all the files with "components" in the name:
COMPONENTS: 38,400 KB
COMPONENTS.SAV: 16,452 KB
components_previous: 30,976 KB
