Hello, I have been having an issue with installing specific updates from Windows Update. There are 6 updates that continuously fail. I have seen you help other people with these types of issues and hope you may be able to assist. I have attached a screen shot of the 6 update and the error codes I get. I have tried many of the basic self help steps to no avail (FixIt, Readiness Tool, etc). I am trying to upload my CBS.zip file but it will not let me. Please let me know the next steps. Thank you!

Great! How is Windows Update behaving now?

The three .NET framework updates installed just great! Unfortunately still getting same error code on Win7 IE9 update and same error codes when trying to install IE 10 & 11.

For reference:

KB2898785 produces error code 80070057
Both IE 10 & 11 updates produce error code 9C59

Hi Kaldak,

Let's get some new logs.

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button
    StartButton_16x16.gif
    then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.

Attach CBS.zip to your next post please.

Hi Tom. Just checking to see if you were able to download the CBS.zip file I posted on Friday night? Thanks!

Hi Kaldak,

Sorry for the delay. Uni just finished and I moved back home over the weekend and have an unbelievable amount of revision to do.

Let's take a look at your registry:

Export registry as hive

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type regedit
  2. When you see regedit on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When regedit opens, using the left pane, navigate to the following registry key and select it by clicking on it once.

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based Servicing

  4. Once selected, click File > Export....
  5. Change the Save as type: to Registry Hive Files (*.*)
  6. Name this file CBS (with no file extension) and save it to your Desktop.

Zip up this file and attach it to your next post please :)

Hi Kaldak,

I think I'm barking up the wrong tree there, I can't see any reference to KB2530548 in that part of the registry! Let's look in the other place:

Upload a file to Dropbox

Note: If you prefer, the same techniques can be applied to your Skydrive however these instructions may not necessarily work for Skydrive.

  1. If you haven't already created a Dropbox account, please do so Here
  2. Although this procedure can be done directly through the website, it is much easier to do so via the Windows client which can be downloaded from the Dropbox website:

    https://www.dropbox.com/install
  3. After you have downloaded and installed that, you should now see Dropbox in your Favourites box in Windows Explorer. This is the folder that will be synchronised with the Dropbox servers, anything that you wish to back up online can be put in here, but today we will be using it to transfer files.

    Favourites%20list.PNG

  4. To access your Dropbox folder, just click on the link in the top left hand corner of Windows Explorer (accessible from any location - Documents etc.). Alternatively, you can double click on the icon
    icon.jpg
found in your system tray (next to the time). If you are still having issues locating this folder, unless otherwise specified, it can be found under this location: C:\Users\{Your username}\Dropbox
  5. Copy all of the following files to the Public folder in your Dropbox:
    • C:\Windows\system32\config\components (it has no file extension)

  6. Select all files by pressing Ctrl+A then right-click and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder
  7. This will create a .zip
    zip_icon.png
    file in your Public folder.
  8. Right-click on this file and select
    icon.jpg
Copy Public Link then Paste (Ctrl+V) this link into your next post for me please

Tom

Tom,

The update that is giving the error code 80070057 is KB2898785, Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 9 for x64-based Systems. I am not sure where you got KB2530548.

Hello Kaldak!

I'm really sorry about the late response. You have a very interesting problem actually.

First, the reference to KB2530548 was not a mistake, it came from the logs, e.g. this line:

Code:
2013-12-10 18:42:52, Error CBS Failed to call external evaluate applicability on package: Package_3_for_[B]KB2530548[/B]~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.2, Update:[B] 2530548[/B]-11_neutral_LDR [HRESULT = 0x80070057 - E_INVALIDARG]

However, upon reviewing the hives you have supplied, your problem is very unusual. Can you please upload the COMPONENTS hive as given in Tom's post just so I can double check my fix before posting.

Thank you!

Richard
