Hey first time on here. So a couple months ago I ran into some BSODs which was caused by a bad stick of ram but at the same time I decided to reinstall windows for a fresh start. In the last couple months Ive tried to update windows and ive encountered the error 80070246. Which wont let me update windows at all. Any help is appreciated!

- I tried installing with my AVG antivirus and firewall disabled (as I read in other threads that might be the cause);
- I used the System Update Readiness Tool;
- I tried to reset Windows update components as described in this thread

Hi,

I need to see some logs from you.

Export CBS folder

  1. Click the Start button :startorb: then click Computer.
  2. Double-click on the C: drive, under the Hard Disk Drives category, and then scroll down to, and double click on the Windows folder.
  3. Find and double click on the Logs folder.
  4. Right-click on the CBS folder, and select Copy.
  5. Go back to your Desktop, right-click on it, and select Paste. You should now see a copy of the CBS folder appear on your Desktop called CBS.
  6. Right-click on this new folder, and navigate through Send to, and select Compressed (zipped) folder.
  7. A new file, also called CBS (CBS.zip), but this time with a different icon, will be created.
  8. Attach this new file to your next post.

Hello,

Very sorry for the delay, I am so busy right now with school. I may have to call in another expert, Tom, to lend a hand in a bit.

Since it's been a while, let's get some more logs.

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Wait for this to finish before you continue

    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log %userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt

  4. This will create a file, cbs.txt on your Desktop. Please attach this to your next post.

Run the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT)

  1. Download the System Update Readiness Tool from Microsoft --> here <-- Please save the tool to a convenient location as it may be necessary to run it again.
  2. After the download has completed, double-click the file and wait while it initializes.
  3. Click Yes to begin installation. Please note it may take some time to complete and may appear to stall whilst installing. Don't worry, this is perfectly normal behaviour. Also note, whilst I say "installing", it's actually running the tool and can therefore be "installed" (run) repeatedly.
  4. When the SURT finishes installing, copy (Ctrl + C) and paste (Ctrl + V) the contents of the SURT log into your next post please:

    C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CheckSUR.persist.log

Hello :)

I am so sorry about the delay here.

Step 1:

Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products

Navigate to C:\Windows\RegBak\{Date}\ and copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.

Now right click on it > Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.

Then please upload it to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big for here). If you have a Microsoft Account, SkyDrive could be a good choice: https://skydrive.live.com/, but any other will do just fine. Make sure to set the file as publicly accessible.

Then send me a link to the file.

Unfortunately, there's also a second issue. One of my jobs on any Windows Update thread is to consider the root cause. And unfortunately, I don't think yours was just bad luck. In actual fact, I think it is caused by hardware failure, specifically bad RAM. I know that this is probably the last thing you want to hear right now, but it unfortunately looks that way. Please follow these instructions to test this assertion of mine: Test RAM With Memtest86+

With hardware failure, it's always better to know for sure than to not know. RAM is very cheap these days, and is usually financially viable to replace, and I'll talk you through all of your options if it comes to it. But to start off with, we need to know whether it's actually the RAM or not, or whether it's not hardware at all. I will temporarily put the fix on hold until we get to the bottom of any hardware problems. Otherwise new problems will start popping up faster than I can fix them. Once it's all over, I'll make a totally new assessment.

However, if in the last couple of months you have already found and removed a failed RAM stick, then of course the above doesn't apply :)

Last year around the end of September I reformatted my computer and at the same time replaced a bad stick of ram that was causing bsods the new stick hasn't given me any problems so far. Il run the memtest wehn I get off work. Thanks!

Hello again!

That sounds like quite good news on the RAM front. I suspect that that was all that was ever there. I see nothing progressive or excessively aggressive in the logs, just some damage which was caused by hardware. But it's probably many months old. (P.S. I apologise for asking about the RAM in my last post when it was already in your first post)

Anyway, I've received your message with the COMPONENTS hive, and have got the file I need :)

I've put together a fix for you, as outlined below:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, DSWBeef_SFCFixScript.zip, and save this to your Desktop. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6rzz49yff97s7pr/DSWBeef_SFCFix.zip
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and DSWBeef_SFCFixScript.zip.
  5. Drag the file DSWBeef_SFCFixScript.zip onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

I then want you to re-run the System Update Readiness Tool and post a new CheckSUR.log. Often the error I've fixed above will reveal more errors which were previously masked.

Then I want you to re-test Windows Update and let me know.

Richard
