Today's Win7 Windows Update failure

Hello. My little laptop friend here had the memory controller die. I sent it to a repair service, and they couldn't fix it well enough to make it stable. The good news is they had another motherboard that fit this model. The bad news is that the original was AMD and the new one is Intel. What exactly they did to SW on the hard disk I don't know. However, when it came back there were two Windows Updates that won't update and give error code 80070490. Now there are 3, because Microsoft is finding more things to update (some others go through just fine). I tried some of the basic fixes mentioned on the Microsoft support site; no change in behavior.

There were a number of CBS_persist .CAB files in the CBS log. They had file names that are obviously date codes. They are very porky, so I had to remove all but the most recent one or the ZIP file violates the site size policy.:thumbsdown2:

And I ran SFC Fix / Scan now and have a log.
Unfortunately it just says I have an error....

Hello yostb, welcome to Sysnative!

Let's grab the latest CBS log and get this fixed:

SFCFix Script

Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.

  1. [sfcfixdownload]Download SFCFix[/sfcfixdownload] (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop.
  2. Download the attached file, SFCFix.txt, and save this to your Desktop. Ensure that this file is named SFCFix.txt - do not rename it.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCFix.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCFix.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a log should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this into your next post for me to analyse please - put

tags around the log to break up the text.

Hi yostb,

Hmm, still no sign of an SFC log in your CBS log. Let's run another scan and grab the logs:

SFC Scan

  1. Click on the Start
    Start%20Orb.jpg
button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    sfc /scannow

Tom:
What is going on? What should be in there? Where is it "storing datablocks"? I really am doing exactly what you said to do, but as far as I can tell it is giving you nothing. It takes a couple minutes to run.

FYI, I ran Windows Update again, and ran the SFCFix script again. Windows Update has 3 errors (same as before). SFCFix give the same answer.
