It's because most of our website uses brotli compression but Wordpress uses gzip and somewhere along the line the gzip download is being served as content encoding br. Most browsers gracefully ignore this, but Firefox throws an error. We tried to find the root cause but it wasn't easy to track down or fix after the fact. We're also just about to replace our download manager and remove Wordpress from the website so..
