Are you able to uninstall ESET, just to rule out that it is blocking something on this server?

Hi,

Still the same issue with DoSvc, so please run the System File Checker and post the result. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS log.
Code:
DISM /online /cleanup-image /RestoreHealth

I tried it and dism failed. No operation was performed.
I attached the CBS log

Great, please do the following, but I would make first a backup / snapshot..

Download
618d4144e9c5b-51a76de01d28c-Icon_Windows_Repair_All_in_One.png
Windows Repair (All-in-One) Portable to your desktop.
  • Once the file is downloaded, right-click on the file on your desktop and choose Extract All...
  • Keep the defaults and click the Extract button.
  • A folder named tweaking.com_windows_repair_aio will be extracted to the desktop. Once the extraction is complete the folder will open.
  • Inside this folder, there is a folder named Tweaking.com - Windows Repair. Open this folder as well.
  • Note: Please make sure all of your programs are closed and anything you were working on is saved as we will be rebooting.
  • Double-click on Repair_Windows.exe to open.
  • When the program opens, click the Repairs tab and click the Open Repairs button.
  • A backup of your registry will be made. After a few moments you will have many options from which you can choose.
  • Please click the Unselect All button and then click to enable only the following ones:
    • Reset Registry Permissions
    • Reset File Permissions
    • Reset Service Permissions
    • Register System Files
    • Repair WMI
    • Remove Policies Set By Infections
    • Repair Windows Updates
    • Restore Important Windows Services
    • Set Windows Services To Default Startup
  • Ensure the Restart/Shutdown System check box is selected and click the Start Repairs button in the lower right of the screen. This may take some time to run so be patient.
  • Once the fixes are complete you will be prompted to restart your machine. Answer Yes.

i'll do that -- backup is in progress.

just to be sure:
i reboot into safe mode and follow the steps you provided?
after the steps are complete and I am prompted to reboot I boot into safe mode or normal mode again?

Yes, start the server in safe mode and run the tool and when completed, reboot the server in normal mode and check the DoSvc service again if it will start normally.

the tool ran without any issues.
after the reboot the vm was never able to start again.
i tried multiple reboots and recoveries with a ie mounted iso but it after a few minutes it always ended up not starting and finishing in the screen where you get to choose:

- continue
- troubleshoot
- turn off

i still have the defect vhd though and can mount it again if you have any suggestions in that direction?

Hmm, that's odd! However, the issue with the DoSvc service is quite unclear, but I've seen a similar issue when a server was infected with malware which was partially removed! So Perhaps it is a better and a more safe option to perform a repair install with the Server 2019 ISO.

  • Mount the Windows Server ISO and run Setup.exe.
  • Use the option Download updates, drivers, and optional features (recommended) and click Next.
  • Depending on your Windows Server version and license, you may see a screen prompting you to enter the licensing key.
  • In the next screen, select the image of the installed Windows Server edition and click Next.
  • Then accept the EULA. To perform a in-place upgrade, you need to check keep personal files and apps. Then click Next.
  • After clicking Next, an upgrade process will start checking for updates, when this is ready click install to start the in-place upgrade.

Yeah, that's what I feared and tried to avoid-
I can't perform a in-place upgrade on this VM, I'll have to create a new one and migrate the services etc.

But hey, I am forever grateful for your time and effort, and since no one can't buy anything with that alone, I'll hop over to the donation-site.

thank you again!!
