[SOLVED] First Post - Windows 7 Update Failure

The file c:\window\notepad.exe seems to be signed also.

FRST Search
  1. Click the Start button and choose Control Panel.
  2. In the upper right corner ensure the View by: is set to Category.
  3. Select the Programs group.
  4. Click the Turn Windows features on or off link. This will bring up the Windows Features dialog.
    Note: This loads your components hive which is what we want. Please keep this dialog open while you perform the remaining steps. You can minimize it if you wish but keep it open.
  5. Right-click on the file FRST64.exe and choose Run as administrator.
  6. Copy and paste
    Code: 
    SearchAll:Package_40_for_KB3184143~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.4.cat;Package_4_for_KB3046017~31bf3856ad364e35~amd64~~6.1.1.1.cat
    into the Search box and click the Search Files button.
  7. When the scan is complete, a message will display that 'Search.txt' is saved in the same folder FRST was started from. Notepad will open this file also. Close Notepad and attach the file 'Search.txt' to your next reply.
  8. You may close any remaining open windows now.
 
Remove Update Manually
  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt.
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.
    wusa /uninstall /KB:3046017
  4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.
 
The uninstall completed but there was no message saying it was successful. There were no errors reported.

Edited to add that I restarted and Notepad opens without the security warning but Explorer still displays the warning.

Restart the machine.

Step 1:
Install Update again with DISM
  1. Download the update MSU here: https://catalog.s.download.windowsu..._5451208ccc96f656f55f35fca5997801e1676bcb.msu
  2. Copy the MSU file to a convenient location (such as C:\temp).
  3. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
  4. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  5. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

    cd C:\temp
    replace C:\temp with your path if different

    expand windows6.1-kb3046017-x64_5451208ccc96f656f55f35fca5997801e1676bcb.msu -f:* C:\temp

    DISM.exe /Online /Add-Package /PackagePath:C:\temp\windows6.1-kb3046017-x64.cab

  6. You should receive the message:
    The operation completed successfully.
    Make sure to allow the computer to restart if prompted.
  7. If you receive any other message:
    Post a screenshot of the Commandprompt window.
    Zip and attach the file C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log

Step 2:
Is the security issue with Notepad now solved ?
 
KB3046017 installed successfully. I restarted after the update. It's interesting that Notepad was opening without the warning before this update and now I'm getting the warning. Windows Explorer had the warning before the update and still has it now.

See post #1224 above. I said Notepad was working. Regardless, both (Notepad and Explorer) now have the open file security warning. Should I continue to ignore the Java update message?
 
Uninstall KB3046017 again. Does that solve the issue with Notepad ?

Allow the update to install. Does it complete ?

Try the following.
Open this web page to download the latest version. Click the green button 'Download Java'.
The Java installer jxpiinstall.exe will be downloaded. Run it.
Click Install and then Install>.
Warning: You may get a choice to install additional software and/or allow to change your browser settings. Uncheck all that!
If you get a pop-up saying "Out-of-date Java versions detected.", click Uninstall>. This will remove the outdated Java versions.

The look of Sysnative is different today. Was there an update or is this something on my end?

Ok. Please do a scan with FRST again.

Step 1:
  1. Right-click to run the tool as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
  2. Note: Ensure that the Addition.txt check box is checked at the bottom of the form within the Optional Scan area.
  3. Press the Scan button.
  4. Please wait for the tool to finish. It will produce two logfiles called FRST.txt and Addition.txt in the same directory the tool is run from (which should be the desktop)
  5. Post the logfiles FRST.txt and Addition.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Step 2:

FRST and Addition files are attached.

KB3184143 is uninstalled. The uninstall process required a restart and I'm glad the computer restarted fine. Also, Explorer now opens without the security warning.

Great that explorer is working normally again.
The latest version is seems to be installed but the older version remains apparently.
Are you able to uninstall Java 8 Update 391 through the list of installed programs ?

The latest FRST log shows something I'd like to investigate.

FRST Scan:
  1. Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  2. Right-click on FRST64.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  3. Press the Fix button.
  4. The tool will now process fixlist.txt.
  5. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
  6. When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  7. Attach the logfile Fixlog.txt to your next reply.
 

Attachments

Copy the file C:\Windows\system32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Activation Technologies\ValidationTask to your desktop.
Zip the copied file and attach it to your next reply.
 
C:\Windows\system32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Activation Technologies is an empty folder.
