Hi,

We have been having issues with windows updates on a Server 2016 server. We have tried all the known fixes including resetting windows update components,
In-place upgrade from server 2016 to Server 2016 to create new system files and registries and In-place upgrade to Server 2019 but issue still persists.
I am attaching the CBS log files and component scanner output log file with this thread.
Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thank you so much.

Hi @syslog232,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

If logs have been already been provided, our team of volunteers will analyse the provided log files to build a fix for your system. Please be aware that this may take several days from your initial post, due to the high volume of threads that we receive.

Hi and welcome to Sysnative,

Please open an elevated prompt, run the following commands and attach tasklist.txt and TaskList.hiv as ZIP-file in your next post.
Code:
reg query "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\Taskcache\Tasks" /s > "%userprofile%\desktop\tasklist.txt"
dir "%systemroot%\System32\Tasks\Microsoft\Windows\PI" /s >> "%userprofile%\desktop\tasklist.txt"
reg save "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Schedule\Taskcache" "%userprofile%\Desktop\TaskList.hiv"

Download the

Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop:

Download the 64 bit version: - Farbar Recovery Scan Tool Link

Warning: This script was written specifically for this system. Do not run this script on another system.

  • Download the attachment fixlist.txt and save it to your desktop.
  • Right-click on FRST.exe and select "Run as administrator".
  • Press the Fix button.
  • If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally.
  • When finished, a log called Fixlog.txt will appear in the same directory the tool is run from.
  • Post the logfile Fixlog.txt as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards reboot the server and attempt to update again. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs.

After running the Farbar tool There was an error message as below which says Failed to Update (3). I also attached the FixLogs.txt.
There are a couple of access denied in the fixlog. I have not tried to install windows updates again since there are access denied messages in fixlog.
Do you recommend to delete reg keys manually which were not deleted the Farbar tool and try to to install the update again ?

Hi,

You can ignore the update error of FRST, but please do the following first.
  • Open the start menu and type Task Scheduler and hit enter.
  • Navigate to Task Scheduler Library > Microsoft > Windows > PI
  • Take a screenshot of this window and attach it to your next post.

Is SecureBoot enabled on this server, this because the access denied error and the SecureBootEncodeUEFI task is missing?

It is a MS Hyper-V machine and I do not see an option for secureboot in the VM settings. Here is the screenshot.
Please let me know how I can find out if the secureboot is enabled or disabled.

Please post a screenshot of the Security settings, when Secure Boot is enabled it will look like this.
