Good afternoon, Team.

With much sadness I unfortunately have to report that after 3 months of running without problems of installing the cumulative monthly updates, It seems the problem has returned ([SOLVED] - Server 2022: Updates failing with 0x800f081f).

Server 2022 (21H2), OS build 20348.2762
Only this time the update is failing with Error (0x8007000d)??

I have of course tried all the standard solutions, you never know whether the standard solutions do actually fix the problem, unfortunately to no avail.

- Tried to install the update through the MS Catalog Server
- running the built-in troubleshooter
- scan /sfc
- renaming softwaredistribution and catroot2 folder and trying the update again
- etc. etc.

I hope you are able to assist again, I have gone through the Update Forum Posting Instructions. I have attached the CBS log and ComponentsScanner log as well. If there is anything else you require, please let me know.

Also, it would be great to know whether there is any chance I can avoid this for the future.

Thank you so much.

Best regards,
Ray

Hi @rampie22,

Welcome to Sysnative Forums!

If you haven't already, please review the posting instructions here, and attach the requested log files. Without log files, our helpers will not be able to assist, and this will slow down fixing your machine.

If logs have been already been provided, our team of volunteers will analyse the provided log files to build a fix for your system. Please be aware that this may take several days from your initial post, due to the high volume of threads that we receive.

Hello Windows Update Bot,

Any chance you can move my message to some real life people!

Thank you!, Bleep!

Hello Team,
Would it be possible to look at my thread? I get the feeling the message has not been received.

Cheers,
Ray

@Maxstar, morning mate, Happy 2025. Not sure if this Bot is working?? :-). Would it be possible for someone to have a look at my problem.

Cheers,
Ray

Hi and a Happy New Year too!

Please provide all the previous CBS logs and a copy of the COMPONENTS hive.

Upload a copy of the CBS folder
  • Open Windows Explorer and browse to the C:\Windows\Logs folder.
  • Right-click on the CBS folder and choose Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Now the message will appear, "Windows cannot create the Compressed (zipped) Folder here. Do you want it to be placed on the desktop instead?"
  • Click on the Yes button here.

  • Attach the file CBS.zip to your next reply. If the file is too large to attach, upload the CBS.zip file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Upload your COMPONENTS hive.
  • Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
  • Please copy this file to your desktop.
  • Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
  • Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
  • If the file is too large to upload here, upload the file to www.wetransfer.com and post the link in your next reply.

Thanks for looking at it so quickly, just tried to run it, including a Server restart first. Different error message this time, see screenshot.

Attached the CBS logs and the SFCFix logfile.

Good morning, Maxstar,

That last fix, seems to have done the trick!! I was able to install the December cumulative update last night. Thanks so much for your efforts.
Now of course the next update is just around the corner hopefully this will go smoothly.

Any simple explanation as what could have caused this? Am I just unlucky with the Server installation? Would a reinstall of the Server fix things for the future? I mean it is not the first time with this particular server!

Cheers,
Ray

Hi,

You're welcome. Glad to hear the issue has been resolved.

This is a common issue with Server 2022, and I've seen it on fresh installations as well after the first update. So I'm not sure if an repair-install will fix this kind of bug!.

Thanks Maxstar,

Yeah, and that is why I am a bit reluctant to do a clean install/repair-install! I just installed the Cumulative January update on this Server and that seems to have installed normally.

Thank again, your help is much appreciated. Have a good day.

Cheers,
Ray
