Trying to update Windows 10 on an old(ish) machine. Please refer to subject line for error details. I'm attaching FRST files since that seems to be the first step in resolving the issue. Please let me know if more detail is needed. Much appreciation in advance!

Hello and welcome,

Step 1:
Uninstall following programs:
- Norton Security Suite
- McAfee Security Scan Plus
- Stardock Start8
Reboot the machine.

Step 2: Update Java
Open this web page to download the latest version. Click 'Free Java Download' and then 'Agree and Start Free Download'.
Download the installer jxpiinstall.exe and run it.
Click Install and then Install>.
Warning: You may get a choice to install additional software and/or allow to change your browser settings. Uncheck all that!
If you get a pop-up saying "Out-of-date Java versions detected.", click Uninstall>. This will remove the outdated Java versions.

Step 3:
Do you still use AOL software, for example AOL Desktop ?

Thank you for the assistance! Unfortunately, I will be away from my PC until Wednsday. I will perform the suggested steps upon my return.

BTW, I don't currently use AOL on this PC.

No problem. We'll wait for your reply.

Okay, I must have really messed this up. I went to follow the instructions that PeterJ provided and found myself in a loop. Please see attached pics for the loop sequence. Upon getting the last screen with the frownie face, the computer screen went black and the PC hung up until I turned it off. This same sequence repeated multiple times. Thanks in advance.

I provided you 3 steps to perform. At which step this new problem occurred ?
Are you able to start Windows normally ?

I could not perform the steps because I could not get past the boot process. Windows won't launch. I'm suspicious that running Driver Verifier may have caused this.

Which actions you did in message #3 before you got the errors posted in message #6 ?
Are you able to start Windows in Safe Mode ?

I haven't been able to perform any of the actions in message #3 since Windows will no longer launch. I've not been successful starting in Safe Mode. When the BIOS loads, I used to see an option to start in Safe Mode, but I'm either missing it or it's no longer available.

I'm should have noted that in the two weeks since my first post, I got impatient and tried some other things that made the situation worse. Is it possible that running the driver verification tool is causing this?

I should also mention that my motivation to run the verification tool was because I could no longer access the internet and I wanted to see if the network adapter was causing the issue. Sorry - I think I made the situation worse.

Okay. Lets see what we can do now, step by step.

When the BIOS loads, I used to see an option to start in Safe Mode, but I'm either missing it or it's no longer available.
Provide a picture of the screen you get.

Attached are the screenshots for my last attempt. I didn't select any options from the initial screenshot and the computer advanced to the second screenshot, and then the third screenshot. I selected Advanced Options and then Windows Boot Properties which led to the fourth screenshot. From there I selected Boot In Safe Mode with Networking. This led to the final screenshot, which is where is has been hung up for last 20 minutes or so.

Ok. Don't touch the machine while it attempts to start Windows in Safe Mode. Leave it for a least 4 hours.
Report the result.

Ok, I was successful in completing step 1 of post #3. I went ahead and uninstalled anything AOL related as per step 3 of post #3. Since I don't have internet connection on the PC, I downloaded the suggested Java installer from laptop and was going to transfer it to the PC via USB thumb drive, but upon restarting the computer, it started going thru the diagnostic steps described earlier in this thread and I'm waiting to get back into Safe Mode to install the Java update.

Okay, last step to install new Java. I assume this failed due no internet connection.

PeterJ, you have the patience of a saint. I'm afaid I have to delay this journey further given that I'm needed across country for a family matter. I don't know how long I will be away, but assume it's at least a week. Hopefully we can resume our journey upon my return. Thank you my friend.

This can also occur if Windows was started in Safe Mode.

Hopefully we can resume our journey upon my return.
Sure. We just wait for you next reply.
