The latest update (KB4056892 Build 16299.192) has not appeared in Windows Update as yet despite both Avast and Malwarebytes being updated and compatible.

The only thing which regularly appears in Windows Update when I manually check it are updates to Windows Defender definitions.

Ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

There's something strange going on with the CBS folder? First time I ran DISM there was no CBS folder in C:\Windows\Logs when I went to find it.

Thinking I'd possibly cut and pasted it to the desktop earlier today instead of copying it for my earlier post I copied it back from the desktop to C:\Windows\Logs and then reran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth however the contents of the CBS folder don't appear to have updated and I believe the CBS.log may be from this morning.

Step#1 - FRST Fix
NOTICE: This script was written specifically for this user, for use on that particular machine. Running this on another machine may cause damage to your operating system
1. Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your Desktop.
Note: You need to run the 64-bit Version so please ensure you download that one.
2. Download attached file and save it to the Desktop.
Note. It's important that both files, FRST64 and fixlist.txt are in the same location or the fix will not work (in this case...the desktop).
3. Run FRST64 by Right-Clicking on the file and choosing Run as administrator.
4. Press the Fix button just once and wait. If for some reason the tool needs a restart, please make sure you let the system restart normally. After that let the tool complete its run.
5. When finished FRST64 will generate a log on the Desktop (Fixlog.txt). Please post the contents of it in your reply and try running DISM.

Ran FRST as instructed. When completed it forced a reboot of the system.

Then ran all 3 DISM variants: Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth, Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and all 3 still gave Error 193.

Fixlog.txt, dism.log and CBS attached below.

Clean boot done and then ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth and it still gave Error 193.

Try the following command:

As we don't seem to be making any progress I wonder if I should try to uninstall KB4054517 through Programs and Features/Installed Updates where it is listed as being available to uninstall?

I don't expect that it will uninstall but if it does after the reboot I could then turn off Windows Update/disconnect from the router and try to install a copy of KB4054517 downloaded from Microsoft Update Catalog rather than allow it to redownload through Windows Update.

I have a feeling that the Windows Update version and the Microsoft Update Catalog are somehow different or maybe KB4054517 was somehow corrupted during the Windows Update download. The install/reboot process during installation of the Windows Update version was definitely slightly different to any I had seen before.

What are your thoughts/advice on attempting to do this?

We are indeed making progress, because I'm checking things to verify if they work, but by the looks of it, we're going to have to go a bit deeper. KB4054517 is fine for now, and there's no need to remove it. Please give me some time while I write out the next steps for you to try.

Step#1 - Capture Process Monitor Trace
 1. Download and run Process Monitor. Leave this running while you perform the next steps.
2. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run dism /online /Get-Drivers just like you have in the past.
3. Stop Process Monitor as soon as it fails. You can simply do this by clicking the magnifying glass on the toolbar as shown below.

4. Select the File menu...Save... and save the file to your desktop. This is likely the default location. The name (unless changed) will be LogFile.PML. This is fine.
5. Zip up and attach the LogFile.PML file as well as your CBS.log and dism.log

Just checked Windows Update and it now showing KB4056892 Failed to install on ‎09/‎01/‎2018 - 0x80240034

I've seen numerous reports of Avast users removing Avast (which is supposedly updated and compatible) from their systems and immediately getting the latest updates. Do you think it's worth uninstalling Avast Internet Security from my system to see what happens?

I decided to remove Avast Internet Security via Add Remove Programs followed by running avastclear.exe in safe mode.

I then checked Windows Update and it found and installed the latest Windows Defender definitions but there was no sign of KB4056892 which it previously stated it would reattempt to install later. It rechecked and stated my system was up to date.

Ithen ran all 3 variant of DISM. CBS and dism.log are attached below.

Once again CBS folder doesn't appear to be updating and contains CBS.log and CbsPersist_20180109092017.log files from earlier today.

For your information Malwarebytes is now flagging your link to DataFileHost as a blocked a suspected bad URL or an unwanted program and won't allow the webpage to load.
