[SOLVED] [8Pro x64] Windows Update hangs, Microsoft Store fails to perform update to 8.1

Windows 8.1 Pro is downloading in Microsoft Store "Installs" screen. "Updates (28)" displayed in top right corner. This is good. Starting to feel happy. At "Checking compatibility" as I type this.

System came back with a dialog asking me to uninstall "Brother Printing Device software" (I have a Brother laser printer so that wasn't a surprise). System offered that I could cancel the update, returning to it later. I cancelled. I then uninstalled the Brother stuff and rebooted the machine.

Microsoft Store still offers the Windows 8.1 update so I selected it and clicked "Download". The Installs window comes up but it now says "Your apps were installed.". System control panel still reports Windows 8 Pro (not 8.1).

I'm unsure as to how I return to the 8.1 update. Do I now do Windows Update again?

Oh... wait... the PC has been sitting idle (on but not in use). After quite awhile, I got this banner across my screen indicating that the computer would have to possibly reboot several times and offering to start. We're off! Rebooted. Now "Setting Up".

What's interesting about this is that there was no clear indication that something was indeed continuing in the background (some sort of preparation leading up to the aforementioned banner). As well, the hard drive wasn't particularly active. I did notice an unusually "excited" WiFi adapter, its LED flashing away... but that happens frequently enough without apparent reason.

System just came back after much updating. Turns out that Windows Update settings were reverted back to defaults automatically in the update so that wasn't necessary. System control panel shows Windows 8.1 Pro. So far so good. Wanted to post this message quickly to also give a sense as to how long the updating process took from my last message. Will post again once I've determined that all's well.

B R I A N !!!!!!! You're awesome!!!!!
Can I say Brian? Somehow a user name in this moment seems less personal than I'd like.
Thank you. Thank you.

I am now running Windows 8.1 Pro.

Windows Defender now downloads updates without issue. I'm aware that it goes through Windows Update. Before the measures applied from this thread, I was having to update Windows Defender manually.

Windows Update itself now reports on important updates and does download them (although the progress reporting is wonkey... holding at 0% seemingly forever and then suddenly jumping to 95% where it stayed for another millenium and then finishing). The updates were applied without issue.

I did temporarily "lose" a set of monitors because the driver was no longer working but going to the display adapter's Web site resolved that issue.

Thanks again, sir. My home office is properly back in business, after spending too many days pulling my hair out before I found you guys.

Ahhh... time for a donation!!
