[SOLVED] After failed 8.1 upgrade, Windows Update shows error 800F0831, sfc shows corruption

I recently attempted to (finally) upgrade my Windows 8 x64 machine to 8.1 in preparation for an upgrade to Windows 10. Prior to upgrading I made sure the system was up-to-date on Windows Updates, which it was. I also created a restore point.

I went through the process of upgrading to 8.1 and towards the end of the process ("Applying PC Settings...") the machine BSOD'd and took me to the Advanced Startup screen. I did not see the reason why the upgrade failed nor can I figure out how to find the reason but choosing Continue to Boot to Windows 8 just continually took me back to the AS screen. Automatic Repair could not fix the problem, but choosing to go back to the restore point I created prior to upgrading did.

I then tried once more to upgrade to 8.1 and it failed again (at 85% of "Applying PC Settings...") but this time even going back to the restore point I created would not work, giving me an error that that restore point (and even older ones) were corrupt.

Eventually I was able to revive the machine by going into Safe Mode and backing up/replacing registry hives with ones kept in C:\Windows\System32\config\RegBack (they were about a week old). The machine booted fine, after that it was a matter of trying to catch up with regards to reinstalling any programs and running Windows Update.

I was been able to apply all missing updates except for one, KB2976978, which throws the error 800F0831. I ran the WU Troubleshooter, which claimed to have fixed the problem, but WU keeps failing with the same code on the same update. I then ran sfc and DISM, which both threw corruption errors that could not be fixed and led me to posting here.

I have run sfc /scannow then immediately run SFCFix, the log is below. It looks like a lot of files are corrupted, which makes me wonder if the crashed 8.1 update left my machine in a state of confusion where some 8.1 system files were written to my machine before the crash and left my Component Store corrupted?

Also, the upload of my zipped CBS logs (231 MB) to sysnative failed, I am currently uploading it to my OneDrive and will provide the download link when it's done.

Finally, in the first time in 2.5 years owning this machine I am being prompted to activate windows, which has been continuing to fail each time I manually try to activate. I'm assuming this is related to the corruption and hope it helps with troubleshooting.

Thanks for the quick response/fix. I have just one question: Should I be overly cautious that this is experimental, meaning if it fails could it cause more corruption or would the repair process just not work, leaving files intact?

Would you recommend I do anything more than just create a restore point?

That method isn't dangerous at all for your system. The script I posted will only launch "search and find" operations. It won't modify anything on your system (files or within the Registry) so it's totally safe to run. Sorry, I should have precised it above :)

Also, in addition to being prompted to activate Windows at each login, I am getting this Windows Update popup every 5 or 10 seconds, which I think is associated with my corruption. I can stop it if I stop/disable the Windows Update service but would that interfere with your work if I do shut it down? To be clear, right now Windows Update service is turned on and running.

SFCFix - Fix Time

WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread. No one else should follow the instructions below to apply that fix, as it could damage your system. If you need assistance with an issue, please start a new thread and someone will assist you shortly.

Follow the instructions below to download and execute a SFCFix fix, and provide the log.
  • Download SFCFix and move the executable on your Desktop;
  • Download the attached SFCFix.zip and move the archive to your Desktop;
    Note: Make sure that the file is named SFCFix.zip, do not rename it.
  • Save any work you have open, and close every programs;
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip archive file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it;

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete;
  • Once done, a file will appear on your Desktop, called SFCFix.txt;
  • Open the file, then copy and paste its content in your next reply;

Follow the instructions below to run a SFC scan on your system and to provide the CBS log in your next reply;
  • On Windows Vista & 7, click on the Windows Start Menu, then enter cmd in the search box, right-click on the cmd icon and select
    Spcusrh.png
    Run as Administrator
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code: 
    sfc /scannow
    Note: There's a space between "sfc" and "/scannow";
  • Once the scan is complete, enter the command below and press on Enter
    Code: 
    copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"
  • A file called cbs.txt will have appeared on your Desktop. Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the SFC scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.
