I indeed agree completely. Just a tough choice when you really do NOT have the time to start over.

For the amount of time that you'll now be spending to fix the new troubles, it would have taken less time to do it right in the first place. This is what I tell people all the time, and not only with computers. People want to take the supposed shortest route all the time, so I let them... They usually understand what I was trying to tell them in the first place after the fact though. On much bigger things than computers as well.
It would've taken you 3 days (max) to have your system all back and running by a full install if nothing was put off for long. This includes Windows updates and installing essential programs from my experience. I've loaded Windows too many times to count.
Luck to you in Afghanistan btw. :)
