  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following commands into it, press enter after each

OK, now that all the files are back the way they should be, go ahead and attempt to install only one update that would normally fail. If it still fails, please zip/attach your c:\windows\logs\cbs\cbs.log

Please do the following.

Remove Update Manually
1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt
2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator
3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, press enter
wusa /uninstall /KB:KB2952664

4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

If it found the update you would have seen the following (The KB number referenced would obviously be the one we are attempting to uninstall)
13005d1433597754-failed-install-kb3061904-kb3049563-wusa-jpg

If it didn't find the update you would have received the following. (The KB number referenced would obviously be the one we are attempting to uninstall)
13006d1433597806-failed-install-kb3061904-kb3049563-wusanotfound-jpg

If it doesn't find the update, please do the following.

Retrieve Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to SendSpace and just provide the link here.

The update was found, but couldn't be uninstalled:
Installer encountered an error: 0x80073701
The referenced assembly could not be found

Note that I chose KB2952664 to test whether the fixes applied so far would work since
Windows Update said it was an important update and it was relatively small (6.5MB).
I was surprised to find that it thought it was already installed, since WU said that it
needed to be installed.

The components file is here:
https://www.sendspace.com/file/3j1bf5

OK, that's what it looked like to me. An older version is installed but somehow corrupt. Please do the following.

Step#1 - SFCFix Script
Warning: this fix is specific to the user in this thread. No one else should follow these instructions as it may cause more harm than good. If you are after assistance, please start a thread of your own.
  1. Download SFCFix.exe (by niemiro) and save this to your Desktop. If you still have this on your desktop from downloading previously, you don't need to re-download.
  2. Download the file below, SFCScript.txt, and save this to your Desktop.
  3. Save any open documents and close all open windows.
  4. On your Desktop, you should see two files: SFCFix.exe and SFCScript.txt.
  5. Drag the file SFCScript.txt onto the file SFCFix.exe and release it.
  6. SFCFix will now process the script.
  7. Upon completion, a file should be created on your Desktop: SFCFix.txt.
  8. Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of this file into your next post for me to analyse please

I'm curious... are the majority of these issues related to actual corrupted files (i.e., a DLL that got scrambled), or messed up permissions, or registry mismatches... or something else entirely?

Actually in your case (so far), all are related to missing files/registry entries.

Try to install KB2952664 again and provide the CBS.log if it fails.

Yes it is expected to sometimes continue to grow after the failure. It's usually best to wait until it stops growing before zipping up so nice job on that.

We may have to do about 3 or 4 more fixes before we're through this one. Please do the following.
