Archiving woes... (major issues on deciding what to do with my backups)

It's not against the law to be paranoid. I just have very bad luck with equipment.

I care for it, keep it clean, keep it cool, but I'm always replacing crap.

Heck, I cleaned one of my enclosures completely down and got it back together and the controller failed along with the enclosure's power supply. It messed with my wd 1tb hard drive's controller so bad that I had to take it in to get the hard drive looked at and the controller reset. Since then I've always lived careful.

I understand nothing lasts forever, but I'd just like to know my data is safe and sound.

And on a note about bearings. I've had a 13 yr old wd 40 gb. It ran but had this awful whine. Found out that the bearings were dry and it would be a matter of time before the motor would seize. Never did. That little 40 gb was determined to continue to run.

Eventually the whining did get so bad that my parents got sick of hearing it as they quote "die".
So it found its way into my shop for recycling.
