automatically deselecting windows

Thank you, Lussy29.

As you can see from the top of your log with the AVG entries, that was why I asked about AVG. We'll reset Security Center in a bit.

Regarding the losing focus issue, although a year old, I found a McAfee KB article that seems to point to McAfee as a possible source of the problem if the loss of focus corresponds to definition update, computer restart or McAfee scan (McAfee KnowledgeBase - Active Window loses focus when installing VirusScan Enterprise or a patch).

If your decision is to uninstall McAfee (as you mentioned in the other discussion thread) and use Windows Defender and Malwarebytes PRO on your Windows 8 machine, I suggest doing it at this time so that we can pick up any leftovers. In addition to uninstalling, I suggest using the removal too from here: McAfee Removal Tool - McAfee Uninstaller. In the event you wish to continue using McAfee, I suggest you contact their technical support.

If you are not going to remove McAfee, just go ahead with the following step. However, if you are removing McAfee, please do that first.

Please follow these instructions carefully. Download ComboFix from the following location: Link 1

!!! IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop

  • Disable your antivirus and anti-malware security applications. If not disabled, these programs will likely interfere with cleanup process. This can usually be accomplished by a right-click on the icon in the System Tray.

Note: If you are unsure how to disable your security software, see the instructions in this topic at Tech Support Forum: How to disable your security applications.
  • If infections are found, ComboFix will automatically reboot the machine to complete the removal process. Please ensure all opened windows are closed before proceeding.
  • Double-click ComboFix.exe on your desktop and follow the prompts.
  • Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
  • When finished, a log will be produced. Please copy C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply.

ok...tnx a lot...just out of curiosity what's a AVG?
and to keep you updated on this weird glitch...on internet pages it keeps on occurring but a few minutes before, I tried to open a movie and try again to watch it full screen...now apparently it seems like the annoying deselecting/minimizing blip is NOT going on ...mumble mumble...
anyway, I'm gonna follow your instructions in a while...but just one big question....if I decide to unistall McAfee before downloading combofix, when everything will be done, how do I keep on protcting my pc?
I didn't properly get whether Windows defender (I repeat windows 8 is running on my laptop) is enough as an anti-virus anti-malware (please, bear in mind that now I've donloaded the Malwarebytes anti-malware program...would it be safer to purchase the Pro version???)
I'll be waiting for your response before proceeding with uninstalling and Combofix.
tnx :thumbsup2:

AVG is an antivirus software. The current version is AVG Internet Security 2014, although version 2013 is showing in both the SecurityCheck and DDS logs in Windows Security Center.

As to Windows Defender on Windows 8, when McAfee is uninstalled, you should see a notice in the Task Bar. See this tutorial by writhziden here Re-enable Windows Defender in Windows 8 (aka MSE in Windows 7, Vista). You'll also want to be sure that the Windows Firewall is enabled.

For some reason, Microsoft decided to rename Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) to Windows Defender for Windows 8. As I've explained in Understanding Microsoft Anti-Malware Software, it uses the same definitions as MSE as well as the Enterprise solutions.

Because I've had a good experience with Microsoft products and MBAM, my personal preference would be to use Windows Defender, Windows Firewall and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware PRO. A Malwarebytes PRO license is currently a one-time fee of $24.95 for one computer.

sorry for my late reply but I've been away for the weekend and today I was really busy.
well...get back to this issue...
when I open the control panel and try to uninstall McAfee by right clicking, it wouldn't allow me....a weird window pops up with no frame and it reads that "Navigation to the webpage was canceled...what you can try: refresh the page" but actually I cannot do anything else than right click on the icon on the bottom bar of my screen and select clse window!!
what should I do?????
I'm so fed up...I spend money for this antivirus and now you are saying to me that it's "him" to cause all the problems????:banghead:

Hi, Lussy29.

Try removing McAfee in Safe Mode. Then reboot to normal mode and run the McAfee Removal tool, linked above.

ehm...
I am afraid it's getting all too difficoult for me :-(
I've been browsing the net to find out how to run my windows 8 laptop in safe mode....not very successful....frightened to do damages instead of good....

Old habits are hard to break and I fell into the trap even though I know you have Windows 8. There is a convoluted way to get there, as illustrated at How To Boot Into Safe Mode On Windows 8 (The Easy Way). First check the McAfee folder for an uninstall.exe. If not found and you don't want to go though the safe mode process, just run the McAfee uninstaller, restart, and then run ComboFix. I'll check for any leftover bits from McAfee and we can remove them.

ok...I managed to go on safe mode but also that way it was impossible for me to uninstall this damned McAfee.
if I go to Control Panel, still a frameless window pops up saying the webpage was't found....if I check for the unistal.exe in the all the McAfee folders, there's no trace at all of it!!!
now I'm back to normale mode...I'm getting desperate and really REALLY pissed at McAfee...I spent 50-60 euro last january for installing it!!! ggrrrr
ah, one last thing...while searching for the .exe file I found a muTorrent file with a sort of McAfee cracked zip files that I had NEVER EVER asked or even searched for downloading!!!
how should I proceed?
and am I currently safe against any kind of virus attacks? shall I run the MBAM every day, while solving this issue with you?
Thousand thanks!

Hi, Lussy29.

I suggest you either contact McAfee support or proceed with the McAfee uninstaller as posted above.

As to the "McAfee cracked zip files" that you said you never asked for or searched for downloading, that is just one more reason why I don't recommend uTorrent or any other P2P program. Obviously, delete the cracked zip files.

ok...I was getting impatient and upset...I run the McAfee removal tool you put the link about some posts earlier...
it seems liek it worked...now if I search for McAfee nothing pops up...not even those torrent files!
shall I proceed with the combfix as you stated here above?

I can understand you being upset. After all, we're talking about your computer!

Yes, go ahead and run ComboFix. Let's see what it shows.

uff....another issue...cannot open the page where to download combofix.
by clicking on Link1 highlighted in blue it says problem loading page..server not found....

Ok....it's a real nightmare now.
I'm typing from my smartphone...cannot use the pc anymore.
I managed to download combofix from bleepingcomputer...run it....it detected that the AVG internet security 2013 was active...it asked me to deactivate it or something from the system tray but I've never seen an icon for it. I searched for it but didn't find anything...well...I said to.combofix to proceed...it rebooted the pc but then the window "Run dll" popped open and it read "there was a problem starting iernonce.dll
Iernonce.dll is not a valid Win32 application".
I clicked ok...the pc started as usual but then when the desktop appeared the nightmare began... Neverending cascade of combofix windows chasing each other in an eternal loop....and I couldn't even turn the pc off....I had to do it via the button on the keyboard.
I'm ****ed up, am I not????

iernonce.dll is an old run once file, not necessary for startup, originally introduced as part of I.E. 5.5.

Restart the computer. If it does not restart normally with no ComboFix log posted, please restore your computer to an earlier date. To do so, see the instructions at How to restore, refresh, or reset your PC, also copy pasted below. Also included at the link are instructions on how to Refresh your PC without affecting your files.

  • Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Search.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, and then click Search.)
  • Enter Control Panel in the search box, and tap or click Control Panel.
  • Enter Recovery in the Control Panel search box, and then tap or click Recovery.
  • Tap or click Open System Restore, and then follow the instructions.

After you've done the above, let's take a look with a different type of log.

Please download OTL by Old Timer. Save it to your Desktop.
  • Right click on OTL.exe select "Run As Administrator" to run it. If prompted by UAC, please allow it.
  • Click the Scan All Users checkbox.
Leave the remaining selections to the default settings.
  • Click on Run Scan at the top left hand corner.
  • When done, two Notepad files will open.
    • OTL.txt <-- Will be opened, maximized
    • Extras.txt <-- Will be minimized on task bar.
  • Please post the contents of both OTL.txt and Extras.txt files in your next reply.
