BOSD after installing Adobe Reader update corrupting win files ???

If I do decide to do a clean install which it sounds like the smart move I think I saw something earlier about the proper way to go about it and not lose any of my important files, is there software unlike expert cleaner that I can use to keep my system clean and running good???

Hi -

I suggest that you follow writhziden's advice -
It really sounds like your registry has been damaged beyond repair from the software you were using to "clean" it. I still strongly advise a clean install. If you are still reluctant, you could try an in-place upgrade install (repair install) of Windows. The in-place upgrade will keep your programs and user files intact and just replace Windows components.

If your programs were also damaged within the registry, though, an upgrade install will still require those programs to be re-installed. The upgrade install is not guaranteed to fix all registry related problems, whereas the clean install would be.

Be sure to back up all important files as nothing is full-proof, i.e., there are no 100% guarantees that windows.old will be waiting for you.

As far as keeping your system running well, clean out temp files, IE, Firefox cache, etc... general items. Use CCleaner if you wish, but not the Registry Cleaner option!

I would recommend staying away from 3rd party tools for cleaning up the system. ccleaner's disk cleaning feature is fine, but as jcgriff2 mentioned, the registry cleaning portion of it should be avoided.

I have compiled some good tips for maintenance and optimizing your operating system:

  1. Run disk checks with Automatically fix file system errors checked at least once a month.

  2. Don't install programs you don't need. If you install a program you don't need, remove it as soon as you realize it is not necessary to have on your system.

  3. Keep your disk clean. Let us know if you need steps for other browsers besides IE9, Firefox, and Chrome.

  4. Run disk defragmenting automatically.

  5. Some further advice from sources I agree with:

Hi I am back with a clean install of win 7 is there a way for you to check to see if everything has loaded right and see if there are any drivers I may have missed to update. Also is there some software I can run that will keep my pc running smooth and fast. or even some processes that can be turned off without affecting the day to day operations ???

Hi,

Just popping in here with my opinion if you don't mind. :-)

When I was younger and had little computer experience, I did actually use a registry cleaner. I even paid for one!

However......the two computers I ran it on had to be clean installed because that registry cleaner damaged the install beyond repair. I.e: half an hour boot ups and repeated crashes. They are a waste of money and you should avoid using them.

The tips in post #23 by Writhziden are great tips. :-)

Regards,
Stephen

Check Device Manager for any missing drivers. Look for warning icons and drivers under Other devices first.
