[SOLVED] BSOD - Computer crashing on startup even after factory settings restore

Is there a way to find out which partition to mark active? I tried what appeared to be the correct one but now when I boot i get the "bootmgr is missing" error.

Ok, I'm downloading PM now. In the meantime I ran Acronis Antimalware Scan again and it came up with 12 threats again. Here is the scan log:

I ran PM and it let me change the partition back to the previous one which was listed as "Recovery" and was smaller. The partition that was previously active was labeled "OS" which I'm assuming should be the correct partition to have active, however it gave me the "bootmgr is missing" error. Now I can get back to the system recovery options as needed. What should my next step be though? For some reason when I ran Acronis it would only let me fix or delete 4 of the infected files listed in the log.

If I mark that one active then I am unable to get to command prompt to fun the boot configuration fixes. Is there a way around the bootmgr error so that I can run those?

You could create a repair disc on another Windows 7 64-bit system, or you can ask Dell for a Windows 7 64-bit installation disc (not the recovery discs).

In the last link, scroll down for contact information with Dell, and ask the support representative for help doing a Manual Reinstallation. Request the installation media to do the manual reinstallation.

Info

Just noticed that you have 64-bit Windows.

The Manual Reinstallation link takes me to an "article not found" page. I cannot contact Dell support as the computer is no longer under warranty. I also don't have another windows 7 computer to create a repair disc from.

You do not have to be under warranty to get help from Dell with installation issues. They'll often send you the replacement media at a fairly low price.

I called Dell and they offered to send the replacement media for $45-50. However, they recommended that I get either one-time fix support from them for $129 or 1 year service for $239. None of those options seem very appealing. Would it be better for me to just purchase a new OS and do a brand new install on the machine? Or would that still not fix my problem? I would hate to buy a new OS and find that the virus is still causing issues. Thanks.

The items being detected by Acronis Antimalware were likely false positives. Sorry, I forgot to follow up on that with you, but I did get a PM back from our security experts that they are not worrisome items.

The main concern at this time is to get your system up and running again. Does the $239 1-year service include hardware repairs and replacement?

I recently helped another user with a similar problem to what you are experiencing, and it turned out the hard disk had failed. Not saying that is the case here, just that it is a possibility. Of course, a hard disk replacement is much less than $239, so you should weigh the cost of likely problems versus paying for a service that you may or may not need.

We are not in a position to advise you one way or another on paying for support from your manufacturer. That has to be entirely up to you. All we can do is offer advice as to where problems may lie and help you make an informed decision so you know what you might be paying for.

Is there a way to test my hard disk so I can know for sure that is the problem? I don't think the 1 year plan included hardware, just software and technical support. Is it possibly a problem with the registry? And is there any way to scan that for issues?

Problem fixed. I got the Dell reinstall and driver CDs today and was able to fully reinstall everything. Computer seems to be working great now. Thanks for all the help.
