BSOD continues to happen

It took all night and most of the day, but I finally got a BSOD. When I went to zip up minidump to send it to you, the folder is there but empty. I also had a problem restarting the computer and it had to go through so autmatic recovery.

It sounds like Driver Verifier flagged a boot driver & resulted in boot-up issues.

It's likely that Windows System Restore (rstrui) ran in Recovery thus wiping out the dump file(s) -- depending on the system restore point used.

Did you happen to see the bugcheck (STOP error) code and driver name on the Blue Screen itself before the system restarted?

Now when I plug in the Kindle, it is not being recognized.

Given the likelihood that rstrui ran, you may need to reinstall the software.

This is a long shot, but please run SysInternals LoadOrder -- I'll look through the drivers to see if anything appears out of the ordinary.

Direct EXE download - http://live.sysinternals.com/LoadOrd.exe

You do not need to install LoadOrd.
- Download the EXE; save to Desktop, Documents, etc...
- RIGHT-click on LoadOrd.exe | "Run as Administrator"
- click on "Copy"
- paste into a Notepad
- Save the text file; zip it up & attach to next post

Change system crash settings so that the Blue Screen stays up for 30 secs (or more) -
START | Control Panel | System | Advanced System Settings | "Advanced" tab" | see screenshot -

Nothing out of the ordinary in LoadOrd that I see at this time. Thank you for running it - it was worth a try.

I couldn't find
START | Control Panel | System | Advanced System Settings | "Advanced" tab" | see screenshot -
I am using windows 7. I have a 'system & Recovery' area but no advanced systems settings tabs.

After some more looking I did find the START | Control Panel | System | Advanced System Settings | "Advanced" tab" | see screenshot - set it to 30 seconds. I had to plug in different USB devices today but I still didnt Blue Screen overnight. When we first started this, I was instructed to only do verify on non Microsoft drivers, but afte reading your message again, that it might be a microsoft drive, I switched the verified to verify all.

Hi -

Glad that you found the system crash settings.

In general, there is no need to verify Microsoft drivers as they are thoroughly tested and if/when a flaw is found, Microsoft releases an updated version via Windows Updates to all of us.

It's important for all USB devices to be on & functioning while Driver Verifier is running.

Hi,

I have a bit more experience with Android (the OS of the Kindle Fire) so may be able to assist you with the Kindle not being recognised. I don't have a Kindle Fire handy, but I do know a bit more about them than JCGiff2.

So, is the Kindle still not being recognised?

Stephen

'A watched pot never boils' and it appears a watched PC doesn't crash. I have had devices on all ports plugged in for 2 days and watching with verifier. Ready to send you the minidump when it happens but nothing has happens for 2 days. Please don't give up on me. I really appreciate your attention to this problem.

'A watched pot never boils' and it appears a watched PC doesn't crash. .

Great analogy!

2 days of Driver Verifier should have produced a BSOD by now if it detected a violation in a 3rd party driver.

the kindle is fine now. thanks for your support. It's the BSOD that is the real problem.

If/when BSOD occurs again, please attach the zipped dump file.

Based on the wait so far, it may be a while but I will send the minidump as soon as it happens. I have kept three usb devices attached at all times. I even rebooted thinking that the drivers would reload and crash the system, but that was probably naive. When I am doing any file updates, i save them as I go along because i know the BSOD will happen at the most inopportune time (which is probably the source of another adage but I can:t think of it offhand). Wish for the BSOD sooner rather than later.

Finally after so many days, I finally got a BSOD. BUT, no minidump. I had previously had to unplug all of my usb devices except for the mouse and internal smartpad. I wasn't home for a while and all of my devices were fully powered. I thought it was not good for them to be attached for so long when full. I have no files to attach for you unless you want to give me the name of something else to send you. Sorry, did not catch the name of the source. ai was engrossed in fixing some Xcel files and didn't expect the interruption. Any suggestions????

BSOD more info

I just thought of something that may help. I purchased a Samsung Smart tv. and my recollection is that the BSOD started since the purchase. I did install the software to link the pc to the tv so they could play together. I think the tv is a lot smarter than I am and while I got it all to work, I didn't find anything useful that I could do with it. I just saw that there is a program called MetaExtractor.exe which is always running in the background. I looked it up and not only did i discover that it is associated with Samsung Link, but that it is known to have bugs and viruses. I have just removed it.

Could that have caused the problems?

Hi Judy. . .

Anything is possible; time will tell.

I am leaving for Philadelphia shortly and asked for other(s) to review your hardware info from PC Wizard as I am not a hardware expert. I sit on the software side of the fence.

Kind Regards. . .

John

p.s. We do not give up easily here & will continue onward as long as you can tolerate us! :)

Re: BSOD more info

I hope I am providing a worthy challenge. I was a software person many years ago (I started in computers when it was an 'art' not a science) so I know how interesting chasing bugs can be. I saw it as a mystery to unravel. Random problems were always more difficult than predictable ones. It's comforting to know there's a group (or at least more than one) who has taken this on. I am able to get around on the PC well enough to get you whatever supporting info you need with your guidance. Have a safe trip and I will be waiting here for a response when you return. I'm sticking with you too. Judy

Hi -

I'll be glad to comb through the system files for clues.

Please run - https://www.sysnative.com/forums/bs...structions-windows-8-7-and-windows-vista.html

Also, please run PC Wizard to provide hardware info -

PC-Wizard CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting

When saving, select "File" | "Save As" -- select "Hardware" (1st option) - save as TXT file

Please zip that text file and attach to next post with the others.

thanks for the update. I am in FLA and assumed you were on the west coast. BSOD continues to happen but no minidump. verifier is still on with all drivers checked. look forward to hearing from you again. Judy

Hi Judy. . .

Thank you for running the apps & providing the output. A few items of interest to ask you about.

There is a discrepancy in RAM in the reports.

The system files show RAM configuration = 2x2 GB sticks; total = 4 GB (4096 MB) -
PC Wizard lists the 2x2 GB RAM sticks as well, but reports total RAM as 2 GB (2048 MB) - the 1st number should be 4096 (2048 * 2) -
Code:
> Physical Memory : [COLOR=#ff0000][B]2048 [/B][/COLOR] MB DDR3-SDRAM

    >> General Information
         Bottom - Slot 1 (BANK 0 ) : [COLOR=#ff0000]2048 [/COLOR]MB - SODIMM
         Bottom - Slot 2 (BANK 1 ) : [COLOR=#ff0000]2048 [/COLOR]MB - SODIMM

A system here with a similar 2x2 GB RAM configuration is reported by PC Wizard with total RAM = 4096 MB -
Code:
  > Physical Memory : [COLOR=#ff0000][B]4096 [/B][/COLOR]MB DDR2-SDRAM

    >> General Information
         DIMM0 (BANK 0 ) : [COLOR=#ff0000]2048 [/COLOR]MB - SODIMM
         DIMM2 (BANK 2 ) : [COLOR=#ff0000]2048 [/COLOR]MB - SODIMM

I don't know why PC Wizard is reporting total RAM = 2 GB; s/b 4 GB.

Please check BIOS for total physical RAM installed:
- Shut system down
- Press F10 during boot-up (some HP systems may use F2 or F12)

Re-seat the RAM sticks - (p 4-17 "Memory Module") - http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01859666.pdf

The system does seem to be running on 2 GB RAM as peak virtual memory use was ~1 GB -- meaning that the system ran low on physical RAM or possibly an app wrote directly to the page file and needed 1 GB from the page file (HDD). I would expect virtual memory to be near zero if 4 GB RAM was in use.

Your page file was created on 5 May 2010 and its size set manually -
- min = 30 GB
- max = 64 GB

Page file info from WMI -
Read More:
These numbers in BLUE above are virtual memory readings from WMI -
  • 644 MB = current virtual memory usage (at the time you ran the file jcgriff2 app)
  • 936 MB = peak usage since last reboot
  • 30000 MB = represents the base allocation size when the page file was created in May 2010 and is not necessarily its current size

Memory usage from TASKLIST -
Read More:
- The total of the Mem Usage column = 1,644 MB
- WMI reported current virtual memory usage = 644 MB
- I believe only 2 GB RAM is being utilized (not 4 GB) as 644 MB virtual memory would be needed to supplement the exhausted RAM

Your current page file info from "syslist":
Code:
 1392508928 11/8/2013 7:52:42 PM "C:\pagefile.sys"

If that figure is correct (1.4 GB), it could be another reason as to why there was no dump file created after Driver Verifier forced a BSOD a few days ago.

The page file size must be = installed physical RAM + 1 MB -- so your page file should be ~4.3 GB, assuming 4 GB physical RAM.

Do you need a page file 30 GB - 64 GB in size or would the default ~4.3 GB be OK?

What is this memory card on drive z: ?
Code:
Drive Z:
Description Network Connection
Provider Name \\192.168.2.3\[h32]memory_card[/h32]

You are running ESET ESS 6.0.316.0; I believe the latest version of ESET ESS 6 is 6.0.316.6 -

ESET ESS 7 is now out. Before you update ESET, the RAM issue needs to be addressed.
