[SOLVED] Can't update (error-code-8007371B) or refresh Windows 8-1

What's the exact name of the .bin file? I'll write a batch script to rename it.

Download Script.bat and save it on your Desktop. Right-click on it and select Run as Administrator. The command prompt should open and close quickly. After that, can you tell me if the file have been renamed to backup.bin?

Alright, try with this one. After running it, a text file called Output.txt will be on your Desktop. Open it, and copy/paste it's content here.

Script.bat

Thank you Aura.

I tried renaming the bin file again but still can't.

Sorry for the delay. Once I get home tonight, I'll test a batch script in a VM to see if it's able to delete the .bin file. If it can, I'll post it so you can use it to rename yours.

I didn't forget about you. Tested a few things on my end, but I still get an Access is denied when trying to manipulate the file. I'm trying to see if there's a way I can take full control of it to rename and/or delete it.

Partial success.

I tried right clicking on the bin file and then "Take Ownership". I was able to cut and paste it to a folder on the desktop.

After rebooting and waiting a couple of hours there is now nothing in the ManifestCache. Does that help?

Oh, by the way, I sent a private message to you yesterday, but I don't see it in my sent folder. Strange. I suppose you didn't receive it?

I received your PM but didn't have time to take a look at it. I'll check it out after lunch :)

Also, now that the blob file is out of our way, let's see if the DISM scan can go through.

DISM - Fixing Component Store Corruption
Follow the instructions below to run a DISM operation on your system.
  • On Windows 8, drag your cursor in the bottom-left corner, and right-click on the metro menu preview, then select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • On Windows 8.1, right click on the Windows logo in the bottom-left corner and select Command Prompt (Admin);
  • Enter the command below and press on Enter;
    Code:
    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  • Let the scan run until the end (100%). Depending on your system, it can take some time;
  • Copy the C:\Windows\Logs\DISM folder and C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log file on your Desktop, then right-click on it, go to Send to... and select Compressed .zip archive;
  • Upload the file on Dropbox, Google Drive or OneDrive and post the download URL for it here;
Note: Please note that the CBS.log is volatile, which means that if you don't upload it after the DISM scan is completed, it won't contains the information from the scan anymore. So archive it and upload it as soon as you can.

DISM is reporting a lot of corruption. I'll see if I'm able to find a way to create a fix for all these easily. Otherwise, it'll be way too long to do that manually.

Do you have your installation media?

Would you be willing to run a Repair Install? A Repair Install keeps your installed programs, files and settings, but forces you to reinstall your devices drivers (if some are missing), and your Windows Updates.

Alright :) A tutorial on how to do a Repair Install under Windows 8 (and 8.1) can be found at the link below. Let me know if you have any questions regarding the process!

Repair Install Windows 8

That was disappointing Aura.

It seemed to go well but it ended up displaying the message "Windows could not complete the installation. To install Windows on this computer, restart the installation."

Then "Restoring your previous version of Windows."

And then, "We couldn't install Windows 8.1
0x800704B8-0x3001A"

I had exactly these results when I tried, several times, to do a Refresh.

Looks like we won't have the choice and we'll have to repair as much files as possible if we want this to go through. I'll work on it.
