[SOLVED] constantly-looping restart/update requirement notice

When I try to install it I get three windows at different points according to the stage reached, all headed simply "Microsoft Visual C++2008 Redistributable Setup" ... nothing additional, or proprietary to other software with which it may be associated.

First window is what appears when it starts, a maintenance mode choice of either repair or uninstall but never just straight install, so I have been going with Repair.

Second window is the request for a source disc, which I have to cancel.

Third window is an error report confirming source not provided, and prompting for a check on location etc.

Screenshots attached in case they help one way or another

The screen shots really helped. Thank you. Please do the following.

1. Download vc_red.msi and save to your desktop.
2. Attempt the install of the previous update again. When you select Repair and get to the message box with the Browse button, click Browse and select the file that you downloaded to your desktop in the previous step.

Let me know how it goes.

It had my hopes up for a moment :)

The source was accepted and the repair process began, but a little way in to it a report window popped-up advising "Error 1311. Source file not found: C\Users\(name)\Desktop\vc_red.cab. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it." I cancelled, and before closing down completely the installer briefly rolled-back some processes it had already moved-through by that point, presumably indicating that at least some of the right wheels had been turning.

Thank you for persevering.

The repair process completed, and reported KB 2538243 successfully installed, thank you!

When I closed the installer window afterward, there was a Microsoft alert window open underneath saying that it might not have installed correctly. This gave me two options, either to state that it had installed properly and to then dismiss that window, or to try the installation again using recommended settings if it hadn't installed properly after all.

So I checked the update log and it showed an entry for the successful installation, so back on the Microsoft alert window I took the first option and confirmed a successful install, and the window closed.

While I was checking the update log for that I had noticed there were 2 important updates waiting to be installed, so I went back to check them and although they were the same two updates -
KB 2538243 and KB 2538242, equivalents for C++2008 and 2005 respectively - I am confident they had been just sitting there already since before these latest steps, after being downloaded either overnight or this morning.

I nevertheless decided that I would now click to "install updates" in order to check if they would both now install successfully, and they did in just a few seconds :)

I waited ten minutes just to check that all seemed to be OK, but when I went to close the Updates window which I had overlooked closing before and was covered by my work-window, I saw that another iteration of KB 2538242, the update for C++2005 that had always installed fine, had been downloaded in that short time and was waiting to be installed despite having been successfully installed just minutes earlier and also at least daily for a long time.

So as a further test I clicked "install update" on it right then, checked that it was successful and had cleared, then immediately clicked to check for updates and right away windows downloaded it again and it is now waiting to be installed.

So to summarise, it seems you have fixed both the constant nag-windows for me and also the sticking
KB 2538243 update now, and it also appears that there was/is a second *looping* fault as well that just got completely overshadowed ... the constant reinstalling, ignoring, re-downloading, and re-reinstalling of KB 2538242 which relates to C++2005.

If all that that fault does however is to keep going round in circles quietly all to itself, it is liveable-with as long as the underlying installation is indeed going ahead each time perfectly ok and isn't setting some future trap for when I might go to use a programme/utility that needs it, and then can't.

I am happy to follow your guidance on whether that is a last thing that you feel needs to be taken care of to complete everything now, or if you wish to leave it because in reality it is of little real consequence or effect ... I am extremely grateful indeed for ALL
your time and attention to deal with the nuisance-effect problems that have now been eliminated.

Just one question either way however ...

... when the repair of KB2538243 went through successfully, the final window before closing advised "It is highly recommended that you download and install the latest service pack and security updates for this product". I have assumed that that is just a standard cautionary notice, however if it is something actually needing to be done, is the "product" it is referring-to the programme/software that C++2008 was installed as part of in the first place, and if so how can I track that down, would there be there an association I could find somewhere in Windows if necessary?

Or is the "product" the C++2008 itself and any continuing updates will therefore already be dealing with service packs and security concerns and I don't need to take any steps?

Windows Update takes care of this. This message is basically telling you that if any updates show up in Windows Update for this that they should be installed.

Now that 243 is dealt with it's time to work on 242.

Please manually download KB2538242 (you want vcredist_x86.EXE) and save to your desktop. Attempt to install this update from the downloaded file and let me know the results. Thanks.

Very close to the same as with 243, but initially not a Repair/Uninstall menu but the license terms to agree as part of Preparing To Install.

On agreeing terms this window opens as before looking for a source disk:

Similar to 243 to a point ... after accepting terms it accepts the .msi when pointed to it.

In a new window it then asks to wait while configuring, though that window then closes sharply after a couple of seconds with no further activity. It doesn't get as far as wanting the .cab it seems, or perhaps doesn't need it ...

I have checked the update log in case it simply completed successfully in a blink but didn't provide a confirmation report, but for today there are only the three previous successful installations shown.

I repeated the steps two times more to check, same results and nil added installation/s in the Update Log

No, since fixing 243 earlier Windows Update has not downloaded that one again.

242 has been downloaded and installed three times today so far, each time followed by WU downloading it again leading to the subsequent install.

Right now 242 is back following the last install operation, and no doubt will install successfully again when the time comes and will then be replaced by a further download by WU, keeping the loop going.

OK, got it. If you try installing 242 again, does it give you the option to Uninstall? If so, could you do that and let me know the results?

No, no repair or uninstall option, just straight to "configuring" popup which gets along about 80% of the progress bar then simply disappears with nothing further being displayed.

However ....

I went to the Updates History again to check if this update-try had succeeded but just not produced a confirmation window, and WU no longer contains a 242 waiting to be installed again.

I clicked "check for updates" expecting 242 to then be downloaded again ready, but this time it didn't download anything at all and now it is all-greens telling me all important updates have been installed. The only other updates there at all are the two optionals I mentioned a while ago now that I have left untouched, just updates for my wireless mouse and keyboard.

Outwardly therefore all seems to be in order now in that regard too, with the one exception that when manually trying to install 242 the process disappeared from the screen before it could complete, and wasn't followed by any success/failure report.

Great. If you run into any other issues, please let us know. If Windows Update doesn't detect it anymore then it's likely finally installed.

It was unusual to see WU in green and reporting success!

Yes, hopefully WU is back on track ... there are still no pending repeats.

Warmest thanks and appreciation for your Trojan efforts.

Kind regards.
