It seems to me that you answered your own question. However, I can ask one of the hardware experts to take a look at your system specs. From what I've seen, overclocking is, as you said, more trouble than it is worth.
 
From the Motherboard description this appears to be a HP OEM system so overclocking is not possible(OEM system bios don't have all the same features as retail motherboards to adjust the settings)

The 9800GT was a decent card an upgrade would be a ATI HD 7750 or above or a Nvidia GTX 650Ti or above either of which will most likely require a larger power supply adding to the cost even more.

What is your primary use of the system?

Perhaps the new GTX 750Ti would be a nice choice?

They're not too expensive and are very low powered. Some models don't even have a 6 pin PCI-E power connector at all, they get all their power from the PCI-E slot itself. The card is low power enough that it shouldn't need a new PSU.

This ASUS version for example: Asus GTX 750Ti 2GB Nvidia PCI Express Graphics Card - GTX750TI-PH-2GD5 - Scan.co.uk.

Many of the pre overclocked 750Ti's do have the 6 pin, but the non OC ones do. If you don't want to go out and buy a new PSU, then a 750Ti would be good.

That said, if you don't need the gaming power, then a GPU upgrade isn't really necessary.

I still have a Core2Quad system running here at home, and it's working very nicely. It's used for office work and web browsing, nothing too strenuous. But it's still working well. That has Windows 7 on it - and I would recommend an upgrade from Vista to 7 since 7 did make some major performance improvements, as well as being a more up to date and secure OS. Since your OS is an old install, even the act of doing a clean install would speed it up a lot.

You have to watch PCI 3.0 cards the slot power spec was raised from 75w to 150w in the PCIe 2.1 spec the PCIe 3.0 cards are the first to take advantage of it.
He has a G33 MB which should be a PCIe 1.1 slot.
 
I have a HP M9450f Which was a good system in its day. It is max at 8 gig ram. Motherboard will take no more.

The two fan ASUS is less likely to work because it will need a connector that I doubt your PSU will have.

I can't find the ASUS I linked to in the US, but this also does not need a 6 pin PSU connector - Amazon.com: EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti with G-SYNC Support 2GB GDDR5 128bit, Dual-Link, DVI-I, HDMI, DP Graphics Card (02G-P4-3751-KR): Computers & Accessories

However, Wrench made a good point. He noted that the PCI express slot on your machine may not have the power needed to support the card. I'll leave this to Wrench as he knows more about hardware than me.

If your PSU did have a spare 6 pin, perhaps the 2 fan ASUS would work? Wrench, thoughts?

EDIT - In fact, according to EVGA, that card has a total power draw of 60 Watts. That should work with his mobo right?

Yes that's the new GM107 core, so it does in fact use less power, however I have yet to see one installed in a older PCIe slot. The AMD cards and some of the higher Nvidia cards are having issues, some later model retail motherboards have bios updates to make them work.

If it works it will be a nice performance bump your stock 460w Power Supply will be fine.

I want to mention Corrine that I might be having difficult with WINDOWS UPDATE. I updated as you asked. 125 to be exact. When all done it STILL asks me to shut down and install updates. So I did that again today and there was 6 more. Now that the 6 are done it is still asking me to shut down and install up dates when I try to shut down.

I guess I will try to do this again tomorrow. It seems that maybe 6 files that are microsoft office 2007 updates
are maybe not updating?

How do I clear this from updates memory? Maybe those 6 are corrupt and not installing correctly?


UPDATE: I went back to updates in control panel and click install to those 7 files and it looks like it might of just cleared out after it said it successfully installed. Maybe that was it?
