[SOLVED] Corruption could not be fixed by SFCFix

No, it only backs up the user files like photos, documents, etc.

Because System Image backs up the entire disk, it means all the data is fine.

Usually I tell users to do System Image, because then I have full assurance that everything is backed up, and that all the data is still there.

If you don't have many programs, then you might just do File History :D

So i ran Short Generic Test and under "Drive Status" are the green letters "Short Generic - Pass"

Haven't backed up my disk yet. Will report Long Generic results; percentage isn't moving atm lol

Welp, "Drive Status: Long Generic - Fail". What should i do now? SeaTools says it can fix most bad sectors or whatever ;_;

Welp, "Drive Status: Long Generic - Fail". What should i do now? SeaTools says it can fix most bad sectors or whatever ;_;

Now is the time to do a backup before we mark the bad sectors so Windows does not store data in those sectors anymore (which might result in loss of data)

If you can, please do a system image backup, so everything is backed up, and test the backup (by copying a file and seeing if it opens properly)

Hm i have this things called the "My Passport". It advertises "up to 2TB" but it only shows ~480GB after i plug it in

It had me install its free company's program which backed up files and stuff; doesn't seem to backup programs like System Image though. What do you think? Just want an expert's advice first

The thing about backup is if there is any file/program, etc that you can't live without, back it up. One reason I recommend System Image is because the user does not have to see which files to backup, etc, and prevents issues of not backing a file up.

I don't have a System Image Backup because I have Chrome (which syncs my bookmarks), Office (I have Office 365, but you just need to remember product key), and I save Word files in cloud. My photos are backed up to the cloud as well. Other than these, I don't have many other programs, but it all depends on you

Now, for the My Passport, it said up to 2TB, so it could be a lot less. Just let it backup for now, and then see which files it backed up (For example, your User account folder, etc)

-CKing

The My Passport free program seems to work like File History, letting you choose the disk and the files you want to backup from it. Should i delete it and try a Windows System Image Backup?

Well, not necessarily. If you can, backup your user account folder, as that is very important. The rest (unless you store things outside your user account) may be easily replaceable.

If you have enough space, backup Program Files (and Program Files x86 if you have 64 bit windows)

-CKing

Most of my files aren't actually in my User folder it looks like. Also, which folder holds browser stuff like FireFox's Session Manager history?

If you stored the files in another folder, include that folder in it as well. If you stored things in OneDrive, don't worry (it should also be backed up with MyPassport as it is stored in your User folder, and it is backed up in the cloud)

As for FireFox, here is how to backup and restore profiles in FireFox

You can also set up FireFox sync to backup certain things like bookmarks (as an additional backup). Here is how to do it

i got Kernel Data Inpage Error again, except this tine it has "(win32k.sys)" attached to the end. What does that mean? My system is 64bit

i'm buying a new external hard drive because my WD one is not big enough. Which brand do you recommend?

TBH I did not test many hard disks for corruption (and I don't remember the brands of those drives either), so I can not really tell you which one is more reliable. Although for backups, you should have a slower hard disk with more storage (as speed should not be an issue), but it also depends on what you can afford, and how much data needs to be backed up.

In general, choose a hard disk with at least triple the size of your files that needs to be backed up, so you get spare capacity as the size of data grows

Thanks again. What about the Kernal error thing? And what should i do once i've made a backup?

Thanks again. What about the Kernal error thing? And what should i do once i've made a backup?

We will fix the Kernal page error later (for now), after you make a backup, we will run a command that will remove the corrupt data and tell Windows not to store data on those sectors (and which is why we made the backup; we can replace corrupt system files, but other data needs to be retrieved from backup later)

To do this:
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
chkdsk /r

If it asks you to restart the computer, click Yes
Note: This process can take a lot of time, so it is preferable to do this overnight

After it is done, we will get the results

ListChkdskResult

Download ListChkdskResult.exe (by SleepyDude) and save it on your Desktop.
Rightclick on ListChkdskResult.exe and select Run as administrator
If UAC warns that ListChkdskResult wants to make changes to your computer, click Yes

You should see notepad open (if not, open ListChkdskResult.txt on your Desktop)

Copy and paste this in your next reply

Hello. Sorry for the delay. Lets get a new SFC log and work on fixing it

SFC Scan
1. Right-click on the Start
w8start.png
button and select Command Prompt (Admin)
2. When command prompt opens, Copy (Ctrl+C) and Paste (Right-click > Paste) the following command into it, then press Enter
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]sfc /scannow [/COLOR]
3. Once it finishes, copy and paste the following into the command-prompt window and press Enter.
Code:
[COLOR=#0000ff]copy %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log "%userprofile%\Desktop\cbs.txt"[/COLOR]
4. Once this has completed please go to your Desktop and you will find CBS.txt => Right-click on this file and choose Send To...Compressed (zipped folder). Please upload this zipped file CBS.zip to this thread

Please Note
:: if the file is too big to upload to your next post please upload via a service such as Dropbox or One Drive or SendSpace and just provide the link.
