Critical System Shutdown Errors

Hi all!
I think teknovenus's idea to check the event viewer was good.
The event viewer shows often this error:

Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files (x86)\theHunter\launcher\launcher.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "" on line . A component version required by the application conflicts with another component version already active. Conflicting components are:. Component 1: C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\manifests\amd64_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.9600.17031_none_6242a4b3ecbb55a1.manifest. Component 2: C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\manifests\x86_microsoft.windows.common-controls_6595b64144ccf1df_6.0.9600.17031_none_a9efdb8b01377ea7.manifest.

I'd uninstall that theHunter program and check if the problem will appear next days.

There's also an error about fast startup (before the other error about the shutdown): Windows failed fast startup with error status 0xC00000D4.
It can be disabled in Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options\System Settings - change settings that are currently unavailable - untick turn on fast startup - ok.

Hi ok did you miss the link I gave you in my last post it had all the info you needed for running and downloading Memtest 86 +, Good job on finding the ram and removing it can you tell us how many passes you did as it is best to do it for at least 7 passes per stick and on each slot.
Do I need to download the version from the other link? I was thinking the link I downloaded from was the original version because the other link says it's "based on the original version". I seen 44 passes on this last test when it completed on one RAM stick.

Good job on finding the ram and removing it
Thanks!

Hi,

Memtest86+ is much improved from the original version you used, and it's what we all recommend here. Run memtest86+ for at least 7 passes (this will take a few hours, so run this overnight)

You sure these errors could be related to a game, before I uninstall it?

Should I do this, Why is it enabled by default, and what does it do?

I personally do not feel that is the cause of the shutdowns, but it does have lots of errors in event viewer. If you would like to try, you can reinstall it. But if you don't want to lose any data, then I do not think that is the cause of your problem.

Fast startup is a new feature in Windows 8 designed to improve boot times by saving portions of the windows kernel and drivers to the hard drive before shutting down. This allows it to boot up much faster than before.

Again, I don't think this is the cause of the problem though.

Run the RAM test, report back the results and we'll go from there. :)

Stephen

My USB has now lost space because I run Memtest on it, so I need help with that now. I went to Command prompt as an admin and typed "list disk" / selected my USB / and typed "clean" / in an effort to get my USB back, with no luck.

I went to Disk Management and created a new simple volume, then followed the instructions on screen. Did I do this correctly? Everything seems to be working again now.

There is some confusion here over memory testers - and with such similar names, that is no surprise. Note there is MemTest86 and there is MemTest86+. MemTest86 was first, then came MemTest86+ (which is based on - with permission - MemTest86) when development of the original ceased. Note that MemTest86+ is NOT from PassMark - but MemTest86 is - now.

I prefer MemTest86 by PassMark - "today" - (but that might change tomorrow) because MemTest86 development returned when the program was purchased by PassMark as can be seen by the most recent release of May 2014. Development on MemTest86+ seems to have stalled - again (last update in Sept 2013) - as seen by the fact MemTest86 now supports modern UEFI based motherboards (and that's important!!!) and "native" 64-bit support. MemTest86+ is still behind in those areas.

Understand PassMark has a fine reputation and is well known for high quality benchmarking and hardware testing software so PassMark and MemTest86 is a great match.

I still like Windows own diagnostics and have not found it to be so inferior as others suggest. Especially the W8 version. It is certainly easier, IMO. But again, NO software based RAM tester is perfect, or conclusive.

Regardless, your screenshot in Post #19 indicates you are using MemTest86 from Passmark, and that is fine. But I don't see where you allowed it to run for "several" passes, as you should.

Also, please stop PMing me (and I am guessing others too) requesting we look at your problem. We get notified of replies and will answer (1) "IF" we have anything to add and (2) when we have time. We are all volunteers here and this is "our" free time and we only have so much of that to spread around.

We all understand you want your problem fixed "NOW" - but so does everyone else.

No replies does not mean you have been forgotten. Troubleshooting problems without physically having the computer in our own hands to witness for ourselves what is happening is difficult, at best, when the problem is not obvious - as is the case here.

I dont think there is anything wrong with my RAM from all the tests conducted, so far... I will run Memtest86 again and also try Memtest86+ probably. Are there any other reasons I'm getting this error? DigitalStorm says a program on the computer is most likely not shutting down completely before the computer turns off. I dont know, I'm just frustrated. I have read other things that say it's a bug from Microsoft, others say pay no attention to it.

Sorry.

May I ask, how is the problem obvious?

After re-reading your first post....there is nothing physically wrong with your system, it's just showing in the event viewer log that you have some corrupt shutdowns. Is this correct?

I was wondering that, apart from the errors showing in the event viewer is there anything wrong with your system?

I don't know if there is anything wrong, it seems fine, but I don't know how to check it. Why are the errors there if there is nothing wrong? Would one of you check your logs, to see if you have the same errors on your computer for me?
