[SOLVED] Cumulative updates keep failing on new Windows Server 2022 installation

Hi,

Warning: This fix was written specifically for this system. Do not run this fix on another system.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.
  • Download the attachment SFCFix.zip and save it to your desktop.
  • Drag the SFCFix.zip file over the SFCFix.exe executable and release it.

  • SFCFix will launch, let it complete.
  • Once done, a file will appear on your desktop, called SFCFix.txt.
  • Post the logfile (SFCFix.txt) as attachment in your next reply.

Afterwards attempt to update again with Process Monitor running. If it fails attach a new copy of the CBS logs and the *.PML file.

Hi Maxstar,

First of all, please know that I am very happy in how much effort you are putting into this. Thank you a lot!

I just tried the latest fix, but it is still not working. Same error / symptoms.
The logs can be found here . This time I did not reboot since that hasn't helped before.

Some news that may be relevant, I heard from a colleague that this server was installed as Server 2022 Standard Evaluation version, which was then upgraded to non-Evaluation with a DISM command.
We have done this on other servers too without any problems with Windows update.

Greets,
M

Hi,

I noticed that this was first an evaluation version, because there are still some remnants into the registry. Are you able to clone this server, then we could try a repair install to see if it will resolve this issue.

In-place upgrade Server 2022.
  • Mount the Windows Server ISO and run Setup.exe. You can use the Microsoft Evaluation Centre to download the ISO files.
  • Use the option Download updates, drivers, and optional features (recommended) and click Next.
  • Note: If you don't want to update during the in-place upgrade, press Change how setup downloads updates and select Not right now - !!! Not recommended !!!
  • Depending on your Windows Server version and license, you may see a screen prompting you to enter the licensing key.
  • In the next screen, select the image of the installed Windows Server edition and click Next.
  • Then accept the EULA. To perform a in-place upgrade, you need to check keep personal files and apps. Then click Next.
  • After clicking Next, an upgrade process will start checking for updates, when this is ready click install to start the in-place upgrade.

Hi Maxstar,

Thanks for the reply. As this is a domain controller / file server / lots of other roles.
In your experience, will a "repair" / in place upgrade will do just fine, of will a lot of things get messed up?

We could do this in the weekend. Make a vmware snapshot > try to repair > test.
If it fails or does not help we can revert to the snapshot.

Normally, a repair installation has no effect on the entire configuration, see also this article of Microsoft.
Microsoft said:
An in-place upgrade allows you to go from an older operating system to a newer one while keeping your settings, server roles, and data intact.
But in my opinion it is always recommended to create a full backup and/or snapshot first.

Hi Maxstar,

Yeah!!! This fixed it! Somehow the installation date of the update is 1 day in the future, but I don't care.
Updates are working again.

Thank you A LOT for all of your efforts!

Greets, M
