Burn it to a CD instead and boot from the CD.

That pretty much rules out the ram, leaving either the CPU or motherboard as the issue.
About the only way to find it from here is to swap in spare parts not really something you can do easily, but a used CPU would be the cheapest part to start with.

Thank you. What is the prognosis without doing either of these, I mean how much longer can I continue to use the laptop before something major goes wrong? I know it's difficult to tell, I just wanted to know your experience on the matter.

I hard to tell it could continue like it is for years or get gradually worse.
