Hello,

I have a Windows Server 2016 server OS which I've inherited which is several years behind on Windows Updates. Attempts to install the latest updates have failed and I believe it is due to corruption in the Windows Component store. The system runs 'SFC /scannow' without issue, but attempts to perform 'DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth' result in an 'array out of bounds' error.

Looking through the CBS logs, I could see that there were package files missing and I was able to download the missing files using the Windows Update Catalog, unpack them, and use them as the source for DISM to successfully repair those components. The only issue is that the last set of missing packages are all from KB5010359 which has expired and is no longer available on the Windows Update Catalog.

Does anyone still have access to this KB by any chance or know of a way to download it? I've also attempted to un-install the KB using 'wusa /uninstall /kb:KB5010359', but it just returns an error that the update is not installed.

Thank you!

Hello and welcome,

Attach the complete log file showing the missing KB5010359 packages.

Thank you! I followed your instructions and below is the output from the SFCFix.txt file. The system is now passing SFC /scannow and DISM /RestoreHealth scans without issue, but I still can't get it to install the latest Windows Updates, I'm afraid.

Restart the machine.
Check Windows Update again and report the result.
If it fails, copy the files C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\cbs.log and C:\Windows\Logs\DISM\dism.log to your desktop.
Zip the copied files and attach the zipfile to your next reply.

I restarted the machine and attempted to update it, but the update fails during download. I also tried downloading the most recent CU from the Microsoft Update Catalog and manually installing it, but this also failed.

Attached are the two logs files you requested.
Thank you!

Provide the Components Hive
1. Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Config and locate the COMPONENTS file.
2. Please copy this file to your desktop.
Note: If you receive an error that this file is in-use, simply reboot your computer and try again. Note: If you find that you need to reboot and are unable to because this is a server then try Option#2 below.
3. Right-click on this file on your desktop and select Send To...Compressed (zipped) folder. This will create a file named COMPONENTS.ZIP on your desktop.
4. The file will likely be too large to upload here so please upload to Gofile or WeTransfer and just provide the link here.

Option#2 (only if you are unable to follow the previous instructions)

  • Please download the Freeware RegBak from here: Acelogix Software - Download products
You will find it at the bottom of the page that the link brings you to.
  • Go ahead and install this program and accept all the defaults. After the last install screen the program should open.
  • Click the New Backup button. Accept the defaults and simply click Start.
  • When it says Finished successfully, click the Close button.
  • This will bring you back to the main screen of the program. You will see one entry in this list with the date that you did it. Right-click on this line-item and select Explore Backup...
  • This will bring you into the folder where the backup was made. You should see a Users folder and a Windows folder along with a couple other files. Double-click on the Windows folder to open it. Then open the System32 folder and then config folder. You should see around 6 files in here, one of which is named COMPONENTS.
  • Copy the COMPONENTS file to your Desktop. If the COMPONENTS file does not exist, please fetch it instead from C:\Windows\System32\config\COMPONENTS.
  • Now right-click on the COMPONENTS file that is on your desktop and select Send to > Compressed (zipped) folder.
  • Then please upload the zip file (COMPONENTS.zip) to your favourite file sharing website (it will be too big to upload here). Examples of services to upload to are Gofile or WeTransfer and then just provide the link in your reply.
  • You can close any open windows you have as well as the RegBak program now.

Step 1:
WARNING! The following fix is specific to the user's system in this thread only. No one else should follow these instructions, as it could damage your system.
  • Download the attachment SFCFixScript.txt and save it on your desktop.
  • Save any work you have open, and close all programs.

Followed the instructions and restarted. SFC /scannow still doesn't find any Windows Integrity violations and I still wasn't able to run Windows Update or install the manually downloaded update. Attached are the CBS and DISM logs and here is the output from SFCFix.txt. Thank you!

Right-click on the Start button and click Run.
Typ POWERSHELL in the input field, then click OK.
A blue window appears.
Typ in the blue window Get-WindowsUpdateLog and press the enter key.
Some text will appear in the blue window. Wait for the message "WindowsUpdate.log written to C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\WindowsUpdate.log".
Close the blue window.
Attach the file C:\Users\<username>\Desktop\WindowsUpdate.log to your next reply.

Provide a screenshot of the available important updates.

I should note that our patch management software, ConnectWise Automate FKA Labtech, disables the GUI for Windows Update so I've been using the Get-WindowsUpdate PowerShell command to check and attempt to install updates. Here is a screenshot of the most recent updates it has found:

1736174159325.webp

I should also note that there are still some other issues besides the Windows Update failures that lead me to believe there is still some kind of corruption with the Windows system files, even though SFC and DISM don't seem to find any issues any longer. Every time I log into the VM, I am logged into a temporary profile instead of the actual local user profile, even after deleting the existing user profile from the Advanced System Settings. Also the Start Menu doesn't work (when clicking on the start menu button, the menu never pops up). Just thought I should mention these two symptoms in case it helps.
