Sorry, I do not know how to uninstall KB3140245 properly.

It was installed from a command you sent me: "expand windows6.1-kb3140245-x64_5b067ffb69a94a6e5f9da89ce88c658e52a0dec0.msu -f:* C:\temp"

Please advise.

Thanks.

Try this command:

Remove Update Manually
  1. Click on the Start button and in the search box, type Command Prompt.
  2. When you see Command Prompt on the list, right-click on it and select Run as administrator.
  3. When command prompt opens, copy and paste the following command into it, then press enter.
    wusa /uninstall /KB:3140245
  4. Let me know if it says it was successful or if there are any errors.

Thank you, will do later today.

Just to clarify: it is KB:3140245, not KB3140245 . Right?

Yes, thank you.

What's next?

Try the upgrade again and report the result.

executed MediaCreationTool22H2.exe from desktop

update went smoothly; thank you so very much!!!

need to switch my brain to another task, but want to ask a question or two afterwards if you don't mind.

Great.

Go ahead.

Thanks!

- Do I need to uninstall/clean anything? E.g. there is the c:\temp\ directory with 5 files containing ... KB3140245...

- I have a Surface Pro 3 tablet, used occasionally these days. It informed me a week ago that Win 8 is no longer supported and upgrade to Win 10 is needed. Should I do it via an MS site or tehre is a better way, known only to initiated?

Follow the instructions below to cleanup the tools and logfiles used in this thread.
Rename the file FRST64.exe to uninstall.exe and run it. This will remove all files and folders created by FRST and the tool itself.
Reboot the machine to complete.

You can remove all other tools and log files manually.

Check Windows Update first. Is the machine up-to-date ?
Does Windows Update provide an upgrade to Windows 10 ?

FRST uninstalled as advised, thank you.

The Surface Pro 3 tablet is up-to-date. In fact, that's what the Window updater messaged just now.

It was during the last update that I saw the message from Microsoft about upgrading. No such message now.

Searching "windows 8 upgrade to 10" returns this:

" Upgrade Windows 8.1 to Windows 10

  1. Open Microsoft website.
  2. Under the “Create Windows 10 installation media” section, click the Download Now button.
  3. Double-click the MediaCreationTool21H2.exe to launch the Windows 10 setup wizard.
  4. Click Accept to the licensing agreement.
  5. Select the “Upgrade this PC now” option."
To upgrade this PC from 7 to 10, <MediaCreationTool22H2> was downloaded and used. So, it's either a different exe or a typo. I will see it when start the upgrade. The procedure looks legit - unless you have a different opinion.

Thank you again!

This page tells me your tablet should be running Windows 8.1, not Windows 8 (a.k.a Windows 8.0).

Found this Microsoft page: Which Surface devices can be upgraded to Windows 11? - Microsoft Support
Looks like a "Surface Pro 3" cannot run Windows 11.
Click the blue button below the text "Use the PC Health Check app to find out if your device has any other requirements you need to meet (for example, Secure Boot capability)."
Does that help ?

Thank you!

The tablet runs 8.1 Pro; i5-4300U CPU; 8 GB RAM;

I plan to get on the Microsoft site and look for 8.1 > 10 upgrade on Surface Pro 3. Hopefully, there will be no new issues. Will share the results.

I tried but could not find <MediaCreationTool21H2.exe> and concluded that '21' in the file name referred to the year, i.e. 2021. So, I downloaded the <MediaCreationTool22H2.exe> and ran it as admin. Everything went well until the phase where the OS was being installed. At some point, the blue screen appeared with a very meaningful message: "Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart..." (I was too slow and did not photographed the screen.) The "device" did restart and went back to Win 8.1.

So, I made the decision to leave things as they are. Unless I discover that the unfinished upgrade created new issues, this tablet will live with the current OS. I should not take more of your time.

Thank you very much for you help!

Sorry I jump in the topic, but...

I see that the topic is marked as Solved!

Well done, @PeterJ! (y)

@BerDov, see? I knew I was sending you in good hands! Now you have a "new" computer! It will take a while to get used of it and personalize it, but it is by far a better operating system. Most important, it is supported with all the necessary updates.

Okay, no problem. It's up to you if you want to continue.
You may attach the files C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\panther\setupact.log and C:\Windows\setupapi.log to investigate further.
