[SOLVED] Error when trying to update to windows 10

You will not be booting from the USB drive. You will follow the instructions for a Clean Boot which disables all 3rd party devices. Then you will run the install from the USB drive and choose the option to keep all of your files. So you won't lose any files or data.

You also won't need your product key. See the following note which was at the Media Creation Tool link that I provided.

IMPORTANT: To upgrade for free, select Upgrade this PC now in the tool. You should NOT be asked for a product key during the upgrade process. If you create a USB and use it to install, make sure to remove the USB as soon as setup begins. If you don't, you may be prompted for a product key. If this happens, remove the USB and restart your PC to continue with setup.

Thank you so much. it took me a few tries, as it did crash once or twice in the middle (I actually had to leave the USB in until the end), but I've now successfully upgraded. So far the other problems with windows explorer crashing and so forth have not returned.

Thank you again!
