Full System hang when playing flash based game.

Is there any back-up type software installed for the USB-3 HDD?

Are the USB-3 drivers current?

Back up software? No... I do all my backups manually.

Yes... The USB3 drivers should all be current... I took great pains to make sure everything was up to date when I reinstalled Windows.

Before I leave for work, I will run your data collection app and speccy and post. I have a little bit of time now that I finished paying my bills.

Having the internet back at work is both a blessing and a curse... The only reason I am on today is because it is Sunday. I am back on as a case-basis as I need the internet to fulfill my job requirements... But then, I don't mess around like some people do...

Okay... On to the reason for this post.

Paging through the files in the JCGriff output, I located these two files... The USB 3.0 drivers... These are downloaded and installed from the ASUS Suport website. They are a year old... They haven't ever given me difficulty in the past, as far as I know, but it is only recently that I had a USB 3 device.

Code:
Module Name: asmthub3
Display Name: ASMedia USB3 Hub Service
Driver Type: Kernel
Link Date: 9/14/2011 3:36:19 AM

Module Name: asmtxhci
Display Name: ASMEDIA XHCI Service
Driver Type: Kernel
Link Date: 9/14/2011 3:36:09 AM

For a while, when my PC was in the spare bedroom, the drive was connected to USB 2.0 ports because it would fail to recognize the drive on boot. I would have to disconnect and reconnect the drive for it to show.

When I moved it into the basement, I connected the drive to USB 3.0 ports... I didn't think of checking before because I don't associate USB devices with sudden system shut-downs.

I am still concerned about the occasional sudden shut-down. I am not getting any dumps when it happens, nor when the system freezes, so I have no reference as to what was going on at the time of the crash... This is extremely frustrating... It's like trying to diagnose a check-engine light with a hammer.

Went ahead and downloaded the latest Asmedia USB drivers as I could find... Found them under USB on the ASUS website... The latest ones listed under my board were the ones from last year.

Code:
Module Name: asmthub3
Display Name: ASMedia USB3 Hub Service
Driver Type: Kernel
Link Date: 2/21/2012 3:54:06 AM

Module Name: asmtxhci
Display Name: ASMEDIA XHCI Service
Driver Type: Kernel
Link Date: 2/21/2012 3:53:58 AM

I am also a little concerned because the data collection apps are telling me that my BIOS is the old one... I just updated it the other day to the latest revision!

EDIT:
SPECCY is showing the proper BIOS revision... But Perfmon is showing a BIOS from 2010...

Well, I have pretty much ruled out the USB3.0 drivers... I updated them and the USB hdd was not connected... I was playing Slingo when the computer froze solid as a rock and required a hard-restart.

One thing I noticed... When I restarted the computer I entered the Setup program and my computer was running at 3.8GHz... The stock speed of my CPU is 3.3GHz. I remember seeing this before and had reset it once before... I am not OCing and made certain the CPU wasn't OCd on a few occasions. As a matter-of-fact... That is one of the first things I checked and changed when I started having this problem!

Is there a way I can force Windows to BSOD on the hang??? I am really drawing a blank here... I am about to call up ASUS and AMD to RMA the motherboard and CPU!!!!!!

Okay... The updated USB 3.0 drivers have not corrected anything. The drive still does not recognize at boot when connected to USB 3.0 slot.

As for the OC... I haven't had a freeze since I reverted to stock settings... I am still at odds as to how the OC came to be in the first place... I did not set it. The only thing I did was update the BIOS.

I am holding out for another freeze... The last thing, other than the MoBo and CPU, that has changed since it had no issues is a WD Caviar Black 1TB drive... I guess it is possible that the drive could be a part of the problem, but I can't see how.

I will keep you updated. Let me know if you find anything in my files...

I know this may sound like a long shot, but USB ports can sometimes enter a protective power state to prevent the system from receiving a surge from a USB device. You may want to try shutting down the system, removing all power sources to your PC, removing all USB devices, monitor connections, etc., and then holding the power button down for 15-30 seconds to drain all power from the peripherals. That should reset the USB power state. See if the system will then recognize the USB drive.

Additional steps may also be needed, but those are where I would recommend starting.

Have you also checked Device Manager to ensure that there are no problem devices showing up related to the USB ports?

I don't think that is the issue... If I remove the drive (or power to the drive) and reconnect it, it will initialize and function correctly.

I just went through all of my BIOS settings bit-by-bit... I made sure everything is running in spec.

I noticed my DRAM was set to run @ 1600MHz but it is only 1333MHz. I also noticed that the ECC option was set to "Enabled". Apparently this is the default for this board.

One thing I just noticed is that Windows "Snap" feature causes the IE window to break up when filling full screen... I haven't noticed that before. It doesn't happen with Chrome or Windows Explorer, only with IE... Strange... Perhaps it is a plug-in issue...

I guess I am going to start from scratch again and run a full set of HW diagnostics, starting with Memtest... I decided to move my computer back to the spare bedroom but keep my work-area in the basement. The cat-hair is annoying me, royally...

Once again, I will keep you updated.

RAM is reported by WMI as 1333 - see file $RAM_info.html, scroll to right.

The SNAP issue is odd.

No idea why they would report differently like that. Don't recall ever seeing it before.

I am not certain either... I see dxdiag is showing my CPU @ 3.3GHz... Which is correct... And I ran that because I had the issue... Does dxdiag report the CPU speed as reported or the CPU speed as spec'd?

I honestly don't know where each gets the info. . . just learned over the last 5 years to check them all!

What is Fuel.Service.exe?

Location - C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\Fuel\Fuel.Service.exe

Read More:

It crashed 7x on 9/9 in just over 1 hour & dozens of times going back to Aug 22.

All appear to have exception error 0xc0000005 = memory access violation, which does not necessarily mean RAM, but it could.

I can't say whether this is related or not.

It is part of the AMD driver package... I think for the Video Card... That would be the day after I installed this card... Gotta love the AMD drivers, eh... I think it is time to uninstall Catalyst Control Center...

Still, the same issue is recurring from when I had the 9800GTX+ installed. Possibly related, but not likely...

Hmmm... Just noticed something interesting...

On all 3 speccy reports (This pulled from first one)

Code:
[B]Stock Core Speed: 3700 MHzStock [/B]

They must be talking with Turbo Boost or whatever AMD calls it...

Most recent Speccy...

From the reports, I think my RAM may have been OC'd inadvertently throughout this problem... This would explain quite a bit...

The only issue I am having with this is... From the time I had the PC up in the spare bedroom to the time I had it down in the basement (started having issues) I did not change any settings in the BIOS... If RAM overclocking is to blame, what set it off?
