Yes.. Windows Defender in Windows 8x is MSE.

Windows Firewall works fine for me -- all systems here.

If you do rid your system of Norton, be sure to use the Norton Removal Tool - Uninstallers (removal tools) for common Windows antivirus software - ESET Knowledgebase

Thank you for your answer re: WD=MSE, & advice on Norton Removal Tool.

Well it would seem then, that the "Windows Defender plus Windows Firewall" combination, would be a good enough alternative to NIS for anti-virus & firewall protection, so it is probably not worth starting a new thread in the "Security Arena", unless it would be to invite more comments re: Norton Internet Security (hopefully some positive ones).
