How do you maintain your Computer??

Gee...for a lounge...this place doesn't seem very relaxing!!! :dance:Just kidding, guys! Some good stuff, here!

Anyway, I already mentioned way back when about my maintenance habits, but all that talk about msconfig "not being a startup manager" yesterday gave me the urge to put my inspiron back to 'normal startup' just for fun. (been running 'selective' so long, I forgot what it normal felt like).

It took a little time to get it to take, and to get it to run my way again. 3 entries wouldn't accept a checkmark. 2 were leftovers from uninstalled programs and the other was from Windows Media Center(ehometray), which I don't use. Anyway, I removed those entries from the registry so msconfig would accept 'normal startup'.
[Unchecked boxes in the msconfig>startup tab for Vista and 7 are located at: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSConfig\startupreg for anyone who might want to remove the entries from startup tab without uninstalling the program, but please do not go into the registry unless you are comfortable doing it and be sure create a restore point and backup/export any keys before deletion]

After restart I deleted a couple of shortcuts from the startup folder and changed a couple of program settings and svcs. I will have to use autoruns to stop a couple of processes that I have no need for, but that's just a little game I like to play about keeping things to a minimum without losing any functionality.

Note: I enjoy changing things around, and experimenting, and I know I do more maintenance and cleanup than I need, but I always have 2 images and 2 data backups so It's not a problem. I'm also much more conservative when working on someone else's system.

Hope no one minds me sharing my little adventure, but this is the lounge so I thought it would be ok here. Peace.

No your right! There are times when it's not that relaxing. Good reply and very helpful.:thumbsup2:
Some things need to be discussed in PM's. I will say no more!!

Hi donetao,

Would you like to start a separate discussion thread on your methods regarding the Window update troubleshooter? I actually have a VM that has some SFC corruptions, we can use it for a dummy machine? You can suggest some fixes and I will try them? You keep bringing up these magic fixes that I have obliviously not considered, I am willing to listen and try, as long as when they dont work we can drop this subject?

To go back on topic, one thing I did to "maintain" my computer is to day my cable management, three years after building it. It still took me 30 minutes to add my second hard drive since the cables were a mess. Right now, it's not that bad, but I could do way better. A good cable management is what I call maintaining your computer since otherwise, you cannot play in it properly after. If anyone have cable management techniques, fire away.

Hi Aura. I built 2 desktops this week and cable management varies on length of cables from the power supply and size of tower. When I can I like to run the cables out the back of the tower and bring back into the tower only the cables which are to be used and best possible position. I include what sata cables from the cd burner and HDD's together where possible including panel wires and use as many cable ties as necessary to form a harness. That way they don't affect the cooling and everything looks very neat. All unnecessary cables are hidden and cable tied behind the back cover out of view.

Does that sound confusing?

I have no magic fixes Alex. I'm just a dumb old country boy that knows how to Google. I have used a thread to fix a update problem on my PC and on one seniors PC. I realize that you have some tough stuff to deal with and you don't have a lot of help. I see we have a new member that's trying to help and he seems to know a lot about windows updates. I don't know ;when it is time say enough, "There's to many corrupted files, time to think about restore to factory." When do you give up? Some of the threads have 40,50,60,70,80 replies and still there are problems. I'm looking for a quick fix that will help take a little of the load from you. I would like to learn your way. I wonder why the autor of SFCFix doesn't help more!! The new guy helping says that DSIM has to clear before the other problems can be addressed. I don't know!! I did attach a link on a thread you were helping on about DSMI. I can see that you spend a lot of your time trying to help members and you probably get discouraged and need a break, but who takes your place. There is a big back log waiting for you. If this link just helped a couple, that would be two that you didn't have to spend your time helping.
I'm not here to cause you or anyone here grief. I don't have all the answers and I'm learning and forgetting things every day. I try to follow all your threads hoping I will learn. You said a long time ago that you weren't comfortable recommending a windows Fixit. That's basically what this is. There are some other things in the link if you look for them. Some of things on the link seem similar to what you suggest. I don't know Alex. I'm not even close to having your knowledge about all this. Are there other things that can cause update problems. I never see malware mentioned. Can malware cause update problems. What else can cause update problems??? Can a update be down loaded and installed even if SFCFix shows there are corrupted files. I don't know that either?? There is a Hell of a lot I don't know. I just want to help here on sysnative.
You invited me to be your friend when I first joined sysnative. I excepted and I'm hoping we still are friends!
Here's the link I have used!! Thanks for reading my reply! Teach me these things! I want to help!

Fix Microsoft Windows Update Issues

Googling for answers doesn't always work as I have read over the years some of the advice given can really screw your computer. You need to be able to decipher what advice has a chance of working. To give qualified advice to members you need a sound basic knowledge as well as being able to google,Donetao.
It is not uncommon for tech threads to run 50, 70 or 80 posts if the OP hasn't a lot of experience and struggling.
The longest tech thread I have seen run for 302 posts and had 1,674 views.

Does that sound confusing?

Yeah I get what you mean. This is kind of what I did, but I think I sent the cables throught the wrong hole, back and forth. The thing is that I would have to unplug everything, and plug back everything back to it's place, but now I have some cables from the case that are in the way, the kind of cables you want to move in another position but you can't and it's bugging me.

If you don't have a modular PSU, it's going to be a rough job.

I have a modular PSU at least, so there's that!

Can you start a new conversation for that? I think we've been told many times already to stay on topic.

Keep the topic on maintaining computers, please. I'm really sick of having to scroll past misc. tangents that are formatted poorly in between every comprehensive post.

I'll close the thread next time I see it, because cleaning it at this point is unnecessary effort.

In Oklahoma when someone we respect asks a question. We don't consider that as going off topic. We call that respect and try to answer the best we can.
I showed respect to Go The Power and he showed me respect.
Yes we can get back on topic. I see no need to start a new conversation unless Alex would like to continue with this. I have said all I wanted to about the subject!!

Hi! Go The Power! Can't sleep! If malware can stop you from updating windows patches, then it won't be long before your dead in the water without a paddle. If hackers can corrupt your files and the registry and stop you from down loading windows patches, you're in a heap of trouble.
If you can't fix this problem with SFCFix, IMHO it's time to restore back to factory settings unless you were smart enough to create a back up image of your OS like my friend MR 919. But what does this old country boy know?? Very little my friend. Just my thought tonight!
Quote from MR919!

Just my [last] thought tonight!

I took the liberty of adding "[last]" as this subject has been beaten to death - not to mention the tangents.

I think this thread has outlived its usefulness now after 133 posts.

Thread closed.

Good night to all - 3:30 am here.
