How to Setup a VPN?

So it was the old router that was giving you headaches.
Now, you have to connect a second router to act as a WAP/Switch? Seems that you got it all covered. If you need assistance please let us know.

Thanks! And then, after all of that, I still have to deal with accessing the wife's office - both for remote control and file transfers (and have to reset my NAS to connect to my home network).

No problems at all. It's a Netgear N300 wireless router and it's got a lot of features for home users (like QoS and bandwidth stuff to keep the kids from downloading the entire Internet). Doesn't appear to have a syslog feature tho - but I'll have to check into that further.

Modern routers have great features, it's worth it to upgrade the router (if needed of course) to utilize all the advanced features/settings and security as well. Will you be using the Guest Zone? You may assign a different SSID & Security for security reason. Please navigate on Advanced Tab, then Administration you might find the syslog in there. I also have a Netgear, it's an N dual band and we've only been using it for a couple of months, so far so good.

You might want to check on LMI Hamachi, a great option for VPN, it won't conflict with your RDC and any other remote software.

Will I be using Guest Zone? I dunno - but it sounds like a good deal for when the kids have a LAN party here. If I use that, then I may not need a second WAP (which is currently what the kids use and our wireless printer uses)

As for LMI Hamachi, that's probably my best bet - and it's only $19 a year so it'll be worth it. I've gotta figure out how to do some sort of remote desktop through it tho'. The wife will access her QuickBooks and we'll observe the security cameras at times. If the connection is fast enough, the wife will also end up doing a lot of the office work from home.

No syslog tho' - but the kids are grown and out of the house so I may not need it. I grew used to using syslog with WallWatcher (which is no longer being developed/maintained). I dredged up an old conversation on the Netgear forums - syslog functionality is only provided on commercial products. Home stuff doesn't have it.

Thanks!

If you want to use remote desktop to connect to your wife's computer at the office.

Remote desktop has to be enabled on computers wishing to establish a remote connection.

Create a remote desktop users account on both computers as admin is enabled by default but is a security risk as it gives full access permissions. Using a remote desktop user account you can restrict the permissions further if neccessary.

Use NLA(Network Secure Authentification for the remote connection) it is highest security.

You will need to create an outbound firewall rule and forward port 3389 to the from LAN to WAN on your Prosafe at home for your Lan computer to the remote computer at your wife's workplace.

Create an inbound rule on Prosafe at wife's work from WAN to LAN forwarding port 3389 from remote computer at your home to computer on Lan.

If you will need the extra ports from the second router for your other wired network deives then you may keep your existing network configuration having a second WAP. You may definitely enable and use Guest Zone from your new Netgear's router to have a second and different SSID only accessible for your Guests/Visitors for security purpose.

Sorry about the syslog, I misunderstood it I thought it was the 'logs' which is available in most of the home routers. Syslog and other advanced logs/reporting are available only on business routers.
