[SOLVED] Integrity violations that cannot be repaired - Windows Server 2019 Standard [AECSS19]

Wow, great find there. I've never gone looking for this file before, but nevertheless, here it is! Also, assuming you meant "setupapi.dev.log", as "setupapi.dev" itself wasn't there. Many thanks!!

I've attached the requested .TXT file. However, I'd like to preface this by mentioning that I analyzed this file since your last reply, and I realized that c:\windows\WinSxS\amd64_dual_rdcameradriver.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.17763.1697_none_949cf3aea3a111c3\RDCameraDriver.dll was missing. So, I found a "donor file" from a nearly identical server that had the file (same OS, same hardware). I used SFCFix.exe to import the file:

The server still isn't patching, but it's otherwise healthy. Now it's looking like another file is missing (see attached setupapi.dev.log). Specifically C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_dual_wdmaudio.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.17763.1697_none_fc40b6de1d979ab2\drmkaud.sys.

I'm going to start looking for that file on a donor server as well... Let me know what you think though!

Actually, despite setupapi.dev.log only indicating that C:\Windows\WinSxS\amd64_dual_wdmaudio.inf_31bf3856ad364e35_10.0.17763.1697_none_fc40b6de1d979ab2\drmkaud.sys is missing, I think more files are missing. For example, I found 'drmkaud.sys' on another identical server, but I also see a few other files in that same directory that are also missing on server 'AECSS19'. That's 'portcls.sys', 'drmk.sys', 'WMALFXGFXDSP.dll', and 'drmkaud.sys'. Since those files aren't specifically mentioned in setupapi.dev.log, I'm hesitant to import "donor files" for these.

Please don't replace files yourself, this makes it harder for me to find the latest issues in the logs.

Post the latest CBS log (or the complete CBS folder) to take a look at.

Hi,

There are a lot of file missing from different (preview) LCU's, and some of them are expired, so I need to search for them. Or do you have an identical server with these updates installed, so I can provide a script to collect the files from there?
 
I've got access to about 100 servers running this OS, so I can probably find those files. I wrote a little script as well for this, but I'm sure yours is better. Which files are we looking for?

EDIT: Are we just looking for those 40 missing payloads?

Looking good! Shall I attempt Windows Updates? We won't know how it makes out until tomorrow though.
 
Yesterday afternoon I applied the latest CU (2022-08) and rebooted the server. Typically it would say "Undoing changes", but this time it didn't; the patch seemed to apply successfully this time. Around 6:00 PM the server was hung at "Working on updates... 100%". Coincidentally, I ran into this exact problem on another VM running Server 2019 Standard (we'll call it "CARSON") a couple weeks prior to making this post on sysnative.com. I made an attempt to repair CARSON myself by locating "donor files" from other servers, and importing them where they were missing in C:\Windows\WinSxS\. Granted, I didn't have the luxury of using SFCFix, simply because I didn't know it existed back then. After repairing CARSON, I was able to successfully apply the latest Windows CU, which was progress. However, after it rebooted, it hung at "Working on updates... 100%" all night (from 7:00 PM to 10:00 AM). The exact same situation is happening on the server in question here, "AECSS19" as I type this.

Here's some clues that were present on CARSON, and currently present on AECSS19:
  • Video is just a black screen with a cursor, yet everything is working. I can reach the IIS page and log in, DNS/DHCP works. The server is completely functional from an end user perspective (e.g. the network is operational).
  • When I'm not remoted into it (e.g. I haven't launched my remote support tool, or tried to peek via Hyper-V Manager/RDP) the server still says "Working on updates... 100%". The screen turns black immediately after I remote into the server.
  • Reboot doesn't help. Same thing.
  • On CARSON, to recover from this scenario, I had to launch a remote shell and taskkill TrustedInstaller. This presented the login screen, and I was able to log in. Everything looked fine. The latest CU showed as installed and the build number reflected the latest CU. Definitely strange, considering the indefinite hang time on "Working on updates... 100%".
  • In Hyper-V Manager, the CPU usage jumps between 6% - 10%, so I'm confident that something is still trying to run. Likely TrustedInstaller.
I've attached the CBS.log. I reviewed it as well, and (just like CARSON) it appears to have detected that it's stuck, and rebooted to recover, only to get stuck again. Looks like there's a bunch of write protection failures. I also saw these on CARSON, but back then I was in panic mode and thus I opted to taskkill TrustedInstaller. Today, knowing that the network is fully operational, I'm fine with just waiting for your advice.

  • Open the Start menu of Windows and type CMD.
  • When you see Command Prompt on the list, select the option Run as administrator.
